Henri Lloyd Crap

So I buy a pair of $100 Henri Lloyd TP2 sailing shorts a couple weeks back and after the second time wearing them I notice a tear on the backside. I have no idea how they tore, I never noticed anything and it was very high up to have caught on something. I didn't really expect them to do anything about it, but thought what the hell I'll take them back and see what they say. Well, the Henri Lloyd rep looked at them and said, nope, that's rope burn, not covered.

So let me get this straight, Henri Lloyd gear is not supposed to be able to stand up to rope burn so inconsequential that I don't even know it happened? On a fucking sailboat??????/ Guess what, there are ropes on a sailboat, ropes that move and you make gear specifically for racing sailboats. I don't give a crap about the $100, I'm just in absolute shock that your crap is so fragile that ropes can't touch it.

Guess I'm all Musto now. The Musto shorts I bought at the same time with the Kevlar ass seems pretty good. We were laughing about the Kevlar and having a bullet proof ass. Guess it's to survive a run in with a rope.

I have a fair bit of Henri Lloyd gear. Foulies, shorts, shirts, base layers. All of it has held up incredibly well. My Offshore Hi-Fits have to be made out of some kind of miracle fabric considering the cheese grater nonskid we put on the boat.

I've been very impressed with the service I've received from Henri Lloyd. Replaced a set of 10 year old offshore oilies for free because the fabric was delaminating. One vote for HL from me.

You ripped your shorts and you think someone should replace them? And the company is a dick?

Ultranectar makes (made?) some nice cargo shorts with decent weight cordura.
I don't like my Ultranectar much.Best crew shorts I ever got were a pair of Clewgear. They have held up great after years of use but are no longer available. The rumor I heard was HL bought them out just to get them off the market!! But then again that might be a load of BS.

Hell
Slap some sail tape on the tear and wear them.

I love my HL stuff. Husband's farmer-john's are over 10 years old and still going strong.

I just ordered my 2nd pair despite this thread.

Never had any problems with HL. Good stuff.

We dont have ropes on our boat.

Almost lived in a set of Henri Lloyds for three years. Used five times a week. No problems, until some b*stard stole them. Replaced them with....

Henri Lloyds

Don't think my thermals would withstand a rope burn.

Sew a beermat over the rip. Not exactly Gore-Tex, but.

Let me get this right... You ripped your shorts (not like a seam coming apart) and you want the manufacturers to replace them!?? Ever try taking your car back to the garage because you scratched it while parking and told them it wasn't your fault, the paint obviously wasn't tough enough... Come off it.

Henri Lloyd by far the best kit I have ever used, be it under garments or oilskins. Also very quick to replace the only piece of gear I ever had a slight problem with, no questions asked.

To add for the OPs food for thought. I did the Round The Island race three weeks ago. Two weeks ago, I was suddenly in agony, & went to the docs. He asked me what might have caused it. I thought about it & remember hitting a winch on a crash-tack.

"You've cracked a rib"

"But it didn't hurt at the time"

"You probably didn't notice"

"It bl**dy hurts now"

"It will, don't do anything strenuous for four weeks"

My conclusion? Don't buy anything God created. Next time, I'm going with Satan HPX

Bought a pair of the TP shorts a prior to BDA race, Seams started unraveling at the stiching, HL was very stand up on replacement, although I opted for a light jacket for replacement, Those shorts just uncomfortable and sweat your ass off.

But the Company was very responsive to the product.

Regards

Who pays $100 for a pair of shorts?
What a rip off. For that kind of coin, they should get up and fix themselves.
+1

Lots of gear is way overpriced. Got a HL windbreaker for 20 bucks at the Defenders annual sale. Probably retails for 60. I think my Gill pants were also 20 bucks and gloves for 10. If you shop around, you can avoid paying usurous retail prices.

20 years ago I took a jacket into an Eddie Bauer store, and said "Do you guys do repair? I broke the zipper." The clerk said, "Our stuff is unconditionally guaranteed, pick out another jacket from the shelf and it's yours." I said, "C'mon, I've had the jacket for several years, it's given excellent service, I have no complaint, I'm quite satisfied with it, I'm just looking to repair a zipper and I'd feel like I was abusing your warranty policy if I made a warranty claim." The guy said, "No, really, our stuff is supposed to last a lifetime, pick out another jacket, we insist."

Now EB has changed hands and general area of focus a couple of times since then, but I (and everyone to whom I told the story) bought a ton of EB stuff as a result of that one interaction. Their cost of a jacket was undoubtedly returned to them many times over.

Contrast that with the damage the HL guy did to his brand over a pair of shorts that probably cost him $20.

Great story!! But, I doubt HL paid more than five bucks for shorts probaly made in China or Malaysia.
