This pic is called, “There goes the night.”

Someone sailing into my local bay, taking advantage of the night’s thermal winds (accelerated by it being a fjord bounded on both sides by high mountains).  Today is expected to be the hottest day ever recorded in Canadian history - even here in the coast, record temps.  Daytime high 40C.  Which means daytime winds are like 1-2 kts as the sun bakes everything - and the wind accelerates at night to well over 30 kts, because of cooling/thermal effects.  (Gusted to 37 last night at the nearby wind station.)

Anyway, apologies in advance: there goes the night  here comes the fireball.  That guy in the pic sailing in at 0600 today is getting the last of the evening thermals before the oven shuts things down.

If there were actually Southerners in SE Florida, you'd be right. However, where I live, everyone is a refugee: Haitian, Cuban, Argentinian, Tri-state Area Winter/tax refugee....so many people here speak with NY accent which means they pronounce "ball" and "dog" with a "w" and Florida becomes "Flariduh".  Like the Native Americans before them, the Native Floridians have mostly been pushed to the marginalized land in-land and they are not happy about it.

And it’s always painful to see Yankees trying to approximate Southerners. All y’all Yankees need to understand: just because the cat had her kittens in the oven, don’t make ‘em biscuits. We won’t be accepted by the natives, it’s just how it is. I’m from NM and my Louisiana wife has learnt me that much.

Big wheel keeps on turning...  I'm not sad to see it go, though as it dies it seems the genteel facade is going first. Louisinana in another state that felt like a foreign nation to this stuck in amber NE Yankee. 

I'll be curious to see what happens when all these retired Boomers start dying off en masse off. Will the kids dump the property? Will it be underwater? Still insurable? 

I don't fit anywhere, so I'm not fussed. Just let me anchor.

I grew up in Coral Gables, a suburb of Miami (formerly known as "Miamah") in the 1950s and 60s. At that time, Miami was largely Southern transplants, white and black, and Miami Beach was largely Jewish except for some exclusive enclaves. Things were pretty dead in the summer. SW 8th Street, now the vibrant Calle Ocho, was vacant storefronts.

I returned to Miami in 1973 with my bride, after the Navy. Seven years and two children later, we moved to North Carolina, where we are still in the same house. We visited old friends in Miami just before Covid. It is almost unrecognizable.
