Hanse 37. Self-tacking jib. There's the usual block on the clew, a block on the traveler, then the sheet goes up to a sheave about 15 feet up the mast, back down inside the mast, out the bottom, through another block then back to clutch and winch... Why the hell does it go up the mast then back down and exit at the base? Lots of friction, makes furling etc very difficult. Anybody know anything bout this? Thanks!

Not a ridiculous question at all. the reason they did that is so that you can sheet to a single point with a jib on a traveler. By going up to the sheave on the mast, it allows enough room to get between the sheet and the sail, and it allows the sail to travel from one side to the other without changing the sheet angle.

What you could do instead if you can lead the sheet under the track is to put a block ahead of the track on centerline, then lead it back to the clutch under the track. This allows the sheet to still be sheeted on centerline but without having to make the crazy turn up into the mast and back down.
Here's a Freedom 40/40 with what I'm describing (ignore the track extending past the cabintop):

Thanks Ryley, but I've sailed a quadrulion multis with self-tacking jibs and never seen such nonsense. Is this all in the name of only having one sheet? Wouldn't it be better to increase the number of blocks and sheet like you find on any modern multi?

It is for the same reason that toilets in Deutschland have a little shelf ...
Yes, I've seen these little shelves and wondered about them
...so they can inspect their turds
umm... I'm gonna need more information before I accept this explanation. I kind of figured it was so you didn't splash yourself with a long drop into standing water.

It's a "health" thing.

The health of your turd is indicative of the overall health of your entire alimentary canal and indeed, your over-all body health. We are ignoring the whole mental health issue here concerning playing with your poop.

It's a requirement of the European Fecal Standards and Measurement Board. South Park watchers will understand.
