Himalayan Salt - Good for us?

Wife picked some up to try. Kinda pricey, but supposed to be way better than the processed, iodized stuff we usually use. And online you can get a five pound bag for 20 bucks. Much tastier, as well! Discuss.......

salt is salt and most of the special salt everyone is trying to sell is a bunch of hooey.. you want minerals.. take a mineral supplement.. ever see specials on salt mining in england.. those fuckers are digging pretty dang deep to mine the stuff so it must be even better than the shit from a mtn top..

only time I've heard where salt makes a difference is from alton brown who uses kosher salt because of granule size..

salt is salt - it's a rock

I think fine salt is better than large grain because you get the same salt flavor on your tongue receptors with less sodium intake.

gotta laugh at the label "sea salt" -all salt is sea salt - some are from ancient seas - but it's sea salt

We were given one of those 8 salt gift boxes at Xmas. If you use them right I think they're pretty interesting. Mostly those salts are finishing salts, not cooking salts. We use Kosher for 90% of our pre-cook and during cooking seasoning.

I have no idea if it's better for you. It tastes good so probably not.

If it really came from the Himalayan mountains then it MUST be better, right?

Just like Fiji water. I mean, if you're going to have peasent children in China manufacture bottles, then send those bottles in toxin spewing ships across the ocean to Fiji, fill the bottles with water from a polluted little island, then ship those full bottles across an ocean again in toxic spewing ships, then transport them all over the country via spewing toxic trucks and trains, then sell them to spoiled soccer moms who dump the contents down their kids then dump the bottles in the garbage where they exist for all eternity in land fills and ocean garbage gyres ... well, why would anyone go through all that if the water wasn't absolutely magical?

I'd be skeptical about health claims.

If your sense of taste is finely tuned, you will notice subtle differences amongst salts. Hard to explain. Kinda like noticing the difference between a $5 bottle of red and a $25 bottle.

As PB says, "special" salt gets sprinkled on as you're about to serve. For cooking, kosher salt is fine, or a less expensive brand of sea salt.

The iodized stuff does have a distinctive flavor, too. Not a pleasant one. But if you're not going to use it, make sure you're getting iodine from some other source.

back to the OQ... the answer is no, you're supporting the taliban..

Himalayan salt is a term for halite (commonly known as rock salt) from Pakistan, which began being sold by various companies in Europe, North America, and Australia in the early 21st century. It is mined in the Khewra Salt Mines, the second largest salt mine in the world, located in Khewra, Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan, about 300 km from the Himalayas, about 160 kilometres from Islamabad, and 260 kilometres from Lahore, and in the foothills of the Salt Range. The salt sometimes comes out in a reddish or pink color, with some crystals having an off-white to transparent color.

Salt is definitely not just salt. There is a difference between solution-crstalized NaCl salt and sea salt.

The big difference is Manganese and Selenium, which are necessary for health in trace amounts and which are hard to get if you don't eat enough ocean fish or seaweed.

The reason salt is idozed is much the same reason why your salt should have trace amounts of manganese and selenium in it.

I suspect the advantage of Himalayan salt is that the trace elements were locked into it back when that area used to be in ocean and it has since risen to attitude where it has been away from pollutants and long enough to have trace radioisotopes to half-life out.

Enjoy your salt Billy, shame about supporting the Taliban, but what can a guy do? I think the best source of trace minerals is Atlantic grown seaweed.

But is it sporting to shoot coyotes running under powerlines with a 12g loaded with Himalayan rock salt while sitting in a lawn chair on the back of a pickup while drinking coffee?

The Himalayan rock salt I have lists iodine (and selenium) as a trace element, looks like its got a bit of copper in it too which might not be so good though

Only if it's French, or Aeropress coffee. If your drinking a Strawberry-Rhubarb latte on your truck bed, then no.

I've found Himalayan salt a bit strong, so I use much less.

Unless what your eating is all 100% fresh and hand made by you last I checked the salt content of stuff we consume today is way plenty enough without adding any extra on top.

Processed salt paired with proper foods and yes as some have pointed out vitamin tablets will far exceed anything that a given region might have naturally occurring in its salt flats. Most vitamin popping North America peeps simply piss away those expensive vitamins anyway.

It's true, but some trace elements like Selenium and Manganese just rarely show up in land-based foods, easy to get in seafood though.

Figured out how to siphon sea water into Death Valley yet? Get it pumped high enough and there will be enough pressure at the bottom to de-sal out some fresh and also produce Margaritaville Free Range Sea Salt.
