Saw this same article earlier - Sunnyside is and always has been a black neighborhood so has a lot of elderly people. You know, the kind that are easily intimidated. Not the GOP would do such a thing (I mean the state GOP platform has repealing the Civil Rights laws as part of the goals).
It's being investigated - Houston is not a redneck hotbed (that would be the surrounding suburbs) so we may soon get to the bottom of it. OK, off to go protest the Roe v Wade issue. We are turning some people from Red to Blue.

Sounds like the older folks in Miami who discovered their party affiliation changed to GOP after a doorway meeting with folks carrying clipboards….

I'll bet Sheila Jackson Lee is going to be all over that one - some people don't like her because she is outspoken and gets stuff done. Democrats are motivated now - just got back from a protest against the R v W crap and good turnout and in 2 hours there were exactly 3 assholes, lots more honks, waves and thumbs up. The GOP in Texas, like Putin selling for NATO, is doing a great job of waking people up and pushing back. The state platform is just whackjob full nuts radically insane. Refreshing to see not everyone is ready to jump off the cliff.

We were just talking to the SO's daughter, who lives in Houston now. She said Chicago is safer than Houston. And she works as a 911 operator. So she sent her kids to Chicago for the next month, with his parents, until they can figure out if they can move back home, to Chicago.
NPR had a story last week, proud boys and other racist Republican core supporters revamped after the failed coup. They are working the local direction, volunteering as poll monitors, running election boards, etc. its not a surprise they are doing this. their dubious efforts may even be legal, sanctioned by the election board.

This is Friendswood - founded by the Quakers and I remember when nicotine and alcohol were not sold there, it's south of Houston and where I attended the R v W demonstration the other evening. It's close to Clear Lake and the NASA complex. Lots of long time/original families there although it has grown tremendously. It's nice and never newsworthy. I recently attended a gazebo dedication in the park there and it's an apple pie community. And then this: Marine vet steps down as parade marshal
"A former U.S. Marine on Thursday stepped down as the grand marshal of Friendswood’s upcoming Fourth of July parade after people made threats to her and her family’s safety, according to the city’s parks and recreation department.
Haley Carter relinquished the position just one day after she was announced on Facebook and met immediate criticism by conservative residents. Carter, a retired professional soccer player who also served two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, is vocally pro-gun reform and LGBT rights."
So whoopsies - the committee forgot to check that this area like most suburbs is really red (Trump carried it easily) so it's a wonderful place as long as you are white and straight. She also has a law degree from UofH and is an alumni of Friendswood HS. So the parade goes on with no marshal this year. Because having a gay woman would just be so devastating to the children. The next time someone thinks, big deal they are all the same. Well the vast majority of Democrats in Texas would be just like the Republicans not that long ago. That is how skewed politics have become. Trumpers have rocked the Rs right off the edge of reason and reality.

Exactly. Forty years ago, the two parties in Texas had to work hard to find a sufficient difference to “elect me instead of my opponent.”
It was amazing how well things ran. The roads were absolutely fabulous!!! Tuition at the state is universities was closed to zero. Even the sports teams were winning.
Then things started going to hell. The Pennie’s per gallon gas tax has not been adjusted to keep the percentage the same and there is no money to build and maintain roads.
The extremist whack jobs have taken over the government and they have made it law that rapists can choose the mother of their children and women have no say.
The official state religion is money.
The sports teams all suck except the Cheatin’ Assstros.
The only new roads are toll roads which have been sold to foreign investors.
