How about a The Ocean Race thread?

So it looks like the 65's will not be quite so strictly one design if everyone is doing their own work on the boats.
I think all the work still has to be done within the OD framework - I think some leeway was given in the past few years to the newer/low budget teams (and those based outside Europe) but AFAIK any 65 entering TOR will need to measure back into the OD protocol.
They might relax this to try and entice more teams in but that would be a risky call...

Still strict measurements for hull/rig/sails but the 'extraneous' one-design elements will be relaxed (ropes, bags, interior fittings, etc)

Sorry to keep banging the drum but do we actually know of any team outside of Team Next Gen competing?
I am confused as well. The 2022 The Ocean Race is now scheduled to start on January 15th 2023!

Does anyone other than Herman think this is actually going to happen?

Four imocas confirmed:

11th, Boris, Biotherm and Team Europe

One vo65 confirmed:

Team Next Gen.

Outside of this I have no idea. I’m not so in the loop these days but I’d say that things aren’t as rosey as it’s made out to be on The Ocean Race’s social media pages!

Not sure that host cities will be thrilled to be paying to see just five boats turn up, and with typical RTW attrition rate most probably less.

Do we know why they have the foils rule? Shame team Germany couldn’t do it on that same boat. Would still beat the 65s.

I think they are fitting foils. ? In the Youtube video below they mention going through the design process for foils. So they will retrofit foils like many of the older Imoca 60's

So 5 IMOCAs once Kevin confirms and potentially a 6th in Team Germany if they are adding foils (and can maintain a budget)...

And I think at least one more 65 as Sailing Poland are apparently re-fitting the Akzo Nobel 65 in Alicante but that is still only 2 total...

I didn't expect there to be more IMOCAs than 65s at this point. 4-5 new gen foiling IMOCAs is probably enough to keep my interest but 2 65s isn't...

Yeah would agree with that. Funny as the VOR65's would be far cheaper entry point.

The Team Germany you speak of are now sailing with Benji under the banner Guyot Team Europe so we remain at 5 imoca.

Sounds like they might reach 6 but you’re right, two VO65s isn’t worth having.
