How about a The Ocean Race thread?

Offshore.
Plymouth managed to get one AC40 and two SailGP events because Russell Coutts knows that a UK event is important and Plymouth is the best venue for stadium sailing. I imagine the city paid a fraction of the hosting rights demanded from other venues with LE picking up the shortfall.
Theres a post in the SailGP thread somewhere about Plymouth paid some money and provided free services far in excess of that (base areas etc).

However thats SailGP where there are crowds of people on the hoe watching, crowds of people in boats and on the hills.

A GGR race start will not get that, so no tourism boost, so theres no way the council would pay any money for it...

Still only 5 IMOCA's confirmed...

Do we think they’ll go with 5? How does it make sense on any level?

I guess the real question is can they legitimately finish with only one or two teams at the end? These boats aren’t (almost) bulletproof like the 65s…

Sailing Holland / Team NextGen is out.

No 'orange' VO 65 at the start of Ocean Race
Insufficient sponsors for Dutch campaign
Published: 20-09-2022

IJMUIDEN- During the upcoming edition of the Ocean Race, which starts on January 15, 2023 in Alicante, no Dutch VO65 sailing team will participate. Sailing Holland and Dutch Sailing failed to find enough sponsors. In August, team manager Gideon Messink already informed Watersport-TV that it would be difficult. It is now certain that Sailing Nextgen will not participate in the Ocean Race with a VO65.

The VO65 of Sailing Nextgen was launched in early September, after an extensive refit at Royal Huisman aimed at participating in the upcoming edition of the Ocean Race. The 65-footer has already sailed around the world twice in this race and is now back in top condition. The intention was that the ship would appear at the start for the third time in January with a fully Dutch crew led by Carolijn Brouwer. But unfortunately this is not happening. Despite all kinds of efforts, Sailing Holland and Dutch Sailing were unable to find enough sponsors for the VO65 project.

In August, Gideon Messink said he had two major sponsors: Janssen de Jong and Batenburg, in addition to Royal Huisman. ’’To be able to participate with your own campaign, two more sponsors are needed. If this does not work, the plug will be removed from the VO65 project.”

It has since been confirmed that Sailing Nextgen will not participate in the Ocean Race with the old Brunel boat.

I don’t believe so although I think a couple could (Miripuri and Akzo) but there is no confidence in the class (or really the race)…
Sailing Poland were due to take over and refit the Akzo boat but last I heard this project was also on very shaky ground. I think any remaining 65s (such as Sailing Poland) are going to suffer from the overall lack of participation - no one's going to fund a 65 to bash around on it's own......

One wonders about the amount of work out there for professional sailors with some big events like this disappearing? It seems also that the actions of Mr. Putin will have an impact on that same body of experts over time.

40 pro sailors don't get bunks for an every 4 years RTW race, boo hoo. The super yacht market is bigger than ever and take 30+ 'pro' sailors to sail each one.

At what stage do they just call this off. Its become of a bit of farce now compared to what it was
Maybe this becomes the 3rd leg of the IMOCA stool: Single, double and 'fully' crewed races. TOR becomes another race property like Vendee Globe or RdR and they don't have to provide a mobile boatyard.

I don’t believe they are providing a mobile boat yard this year. It’s each team for themselves…

My only wish is for TOR to talk to its fans and tell us what’s going on. It’s pitiful

I don't think the issue is funding for the race, Volvo still give a considerable amount and 11th Hour have basically bank rolled the entire project. I think the issue is teams and their ability to source funds. The level of investment required is not insignificant and the worlds is not a very friendly place at the moment for those seeking commercial partners!

Sponsored offshore sailing is dead everywhere but France...

The organisers seem more interested in pushing a green agenda & environmental policies then sailing & a boat race. This isnt the 1st time they've been pushing their eco warrior agenda

Yeap. They have lost the plot. Sustainability is surely a nice to have aspect, but when it becomes the main focus of a regatta, the racing looses interest. Their best effort to be carbon neutral would be to cancel it. No travel, no carbon boats, etc. then. (Same thing with SailGP by the way)

Indeed although I’m sure they’ll say it’s the most environmentally friendly race to date. All of this for 5 teams?

As you say, they’ve either lost the plot or it’s the only way to justify the big money these sponsors / host cities have already given them. Double down on sustainability because the fleet is frankly embarrassing
