Boris sounds very optimistic about the time requirements for the repairs, but the reliability of the IMOCAs tells us that it is very likely that not all TOR starters are going to make it to Genoa. Imagine only 2-3 boats make it. Another (death) blow

I doubt it will even start on the 15th January. Surely the stopover ports will have set a minimum number of boats (more than five) when they agreed to pay Salen & Co?

Cause it wouldn't be the Whitbread Race, I mean the Vovlvo, I mean The Ocean Race....

Why not go a step further and allow fully crewed, double and single handed IMOCA's. Logistics for the teams to fit it into their calendars might be challenging tho.

This is absolutely one of the biggest considerations. There is a very genuine chance of not a single boat finishing The Ocean Race. Much more likely is as @Jeronimoll says 2/3, not very interesting and as mentioned elsewhere cities/partners will be surely furious, I don't get it.

Don't worry though, The Ocean Race has a higher purpose and soon the world will owe them and 11th Hour all the credit in the world for creating a more sustainable environment for us all to enjoy. Nothing turns me off more than the hot air they spout. Actually, that's not true, plenty of things would turn me off but perhaps those admissions aren't welcome here haha!

No the righting test is an IMOCA requirement, Boris's bunk house provides the volume required for the boat to self right during that test, as the cockpit is very low and actually open to the elements during the test (I'm not sure it even has fixed doors?)

some new videos. from 11th hour stating their only goal is to win it:



and this one about the village in Alicante. Only opened for a week this edition. Weather could be extremely nice in January, but also cold and wet. A bit of a lottery. Are they doing inports this time? tricky with IMOCA with foils.

Compared to the Europeans 11th Hour Racing doesn't stand a chance. Did you see what Kevin Escoffier did in the Route du Rhum first race out?!

Interesting video: Volvo is clearly still paying a large part of the bill. Only one branded V65 in the flythrough of the pontoons and two IMOCA doubled up. We still haven't heard whether we have a single 65 although apparently it was stated at the World Yacht Racing Forum that two might do the entire lap and others might drop in and out when they feel like it...

Also crazy that Alicante has paid so so so much money for a race village that lasts a week.

My guess: the likely scenario is that failing to find any 'buyers' for a race that had been losing them millions, to avoid embarrassment Volvo agreed to fund JS and his crew to find a buyer themselves. Clearly that was not going to happen, for the very reasons Volvo were walking away. So Volvo have just been paying the bills year after year.

In the meantime Alicante citizens, and probably the EU development funds, have been bank rolling office costs, etc.

As for any stopover ports that have 'bid' to host the race, hopefully they have attempted some sort of 'due diligence' on a minimum number of entries and can walk away without too many losses.

And then there is Disney+. No idea what on earth they think they are buying.

Anyway all will be revealed in the next few weeks.

Volvo agreed to fund the next edition of the race at the time of selling to Atalant, and without taking the title spot.

There were 2 VO65s entered, but then one of the sponsors failed to poney up the cash in time. No race with only 1, so the fleet are out of the RTW. The remaining 65s are not in class, so have been invited along for some shorter legs. Which seems odd as the North Atlantic can be as brutal as the Southern Ocean. I think the 65s being out is a real pity, the door has clsoed for a lot of youngsters, both male and female.
JS seems convinced that they will have 10-12 IMOCAs in the next edition, but so did the BWR and the 5 Oceans...

A new trophy is announced for the VO65 one design class in The Ocean Race 2022-23

Along with five confirmed IMOCA teams racing around the world, up to five VO65 teams will be on the starting line in Alicante, Spain in January, with an option to compete for a new trophy within The Ocean Race called The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup.

The new trophy has been specially created for VO65 teams and will be awarded to the team which accumulates the best score across three different legs of the race: Alicante, Spain to Cabo Verde; Aarhus, Denmark to The Hague, the Netherlands; and The Hague to Genova, Italy.

The Race has become a massive joke! The VO65 Teams will only do 4 In-Port-Races and 3 Legs. That Investment by Discovery & Eurosport to broadcast Leg Starts, Daily Content on Free TV seems to be wasted.

Eurosport & Discovery should have bought the America's Cup. Would have been a better investment.

I'm sure they're both looking at resource allocation and minimum deliverables within contracts. You'd be pretty pissed if you were a host city shelling out millions... Still a real chance not a single team will make it around. I wonder how many spare rigs they're carting around the world on their container ships fuelled by fairy dust?
