How about a The Ocean Race thread?

Schakel

Dayboat sailor
Boris Herrmann (Team Malizia) and Benjamin Dutreux (GUYOT environnement - Team Europe) will both hand over their skipper roles for leg two of The Ocean Race.

I thought Malizia were favourite, bad luck keeps following them.
I quote:

"Boris was injured when he burned his foot with boiling water during a mishap on leg one.

"The pot fell over and splashed boiling water on my foot. I wiped it off quickly but once we got here and went to the hospital we realised this is a severe burn we need to care of so therefore I can't do (leg two)," he said. "But I will be in good shape for leg three."

Will Harris will step up to the role of skipper for leg two, while Yann Elies will join the team as a substitute sailor. A three time winner of the Solitaire du Figaro and a fifth place finisher in the Vendee Globe, Elies is an accomplised addition to the team."

That is what I call bad luck. That will hurt a lot.
He is being treated.

No way Malizia were favorite.! 11th Hour had put the most time in preparation wise with their boat and Kevin's boat was always going to be fast. So the Verdier boats came 1st and 2nd and the Manuard Boat 3rd. I think Malizia is designed for for heavy weather running and reaching with their extreme bow and stern (Banana)

Malizia is a VPLP, not a Manuard (except maybe for the emergency foils that were initially intended for a Manuard boat)

Exactly the situation that Andy Rice and Matt Sheahan discussed on Planet Sail before the start. The sheer violence of movement is part of the risk the teams are trying to mitigate. Surprised there have not been more burns from the Jet Boils .

There was no trial; the matter was apparently resolved between the govt, vessel owner and affected parties.
The Vestas co-skippers were advised not to come to China - so didn't. So of course there was no 'trial'.

I would also state that the Vestas application for redress was denied. I personal know three of the IJs on the panel in Auckland and I would not doubt in any way their decision.

I don't think the article answers the question it's asking in it's headline...it's just a summary.
From the article, the VO65's are currently in their swansong this time, and no more going forward. Which seems sensible to me. However, the suggested re-route next time back to China would be a mistake IMHO. I simply dont care about going north to the Middle East and China after the Cape and never have been - though I understand the need for sponsor $$$'s and coverage. For me, the whole original premise of the race, is a race around the marble - with 'en-route' stopovers, not an off-piste tour of it.

It's all about the money. The adventure is gone from the race.

Sorry y'all. Extreme day at work. Missed lunch, missed the start, pounded down too many imperials and missed y'all.

Watched the start coverage after the fact. Video was great, thank you TOR. If you are listening, please try to cover finishes as well for us viewers following the race from start to FINISH. The start video was great. Good mix of on/off-board videos.

On board, it was interesting the video captured crew calling meters to line. As a helmsman, please give me boat lengths to line, especially when sailing internationally. In the RRS, boat lengths matter.

Comparatively bad sail handling at mark 2 by my favorites (Holcim-PRB). Guyot looking good with the best start by far.

TOR, please consider adding the ability to mute one or both mics. If only one mute, please mute all but Abby.

Regarding leg three, if y'all do a similar course next time, please consider making leg 3 worth more points than all other legs.

Back to racing... I like Holcim-PRB's westerly position. Sunset video was nice. Gotta go there someday. Now I need check the tracker so see how Holcim-PRB's westerly position pans out.

Peace out y'all

In previous VOR's there err dockside interviews and the docket shown before the race start. Not in either of the first two legs of TOR, though. essentially started minutes before the actual race start. Disappointing.

Basically the VO65 projects were not able to find enough sponsor money to race.
So they do a "sprint" sailing only legs 1, 6 and 7. They'll appear again June 8th at the start of leg 6 in Aarhus.
Some of them will do races in the Med until then.
