Anyone know how to find out the details of the race course for the in-port tomorrow in Table Bay? Sadly I am not there to kite out into the action like last two times, but I have friends there who would like to do that. They probably will just launch from Milnerton and make their way out to wherever the boats are, but it would be good to know what the turning marks are so they can get into the inside of the track to avoid getting in the way.

There's a map here that may help:

Thanks, but what a crying shame. I simply cannot believe they would put the course there. At best when at the east edge they will catch some of the SEaster, but at the western edge there will be flat calm. Beyond bizarre, could any South African sailor have been involved in that? Why not have it over near the shore at Milnerton where you can be 100% confident the SEaster will be howling and it would be spectacular. Anyway, for kitesurfers that is an impossible location, not only because the wind will be unreliable there, but because it is so far from land and the wind is offshore it is too risky in case something goes wrong.

IMOCA are terrible for racing around the cans. TOR is not taking any risk with the in-port. But IMHO they should just get rid of it.

with Guyot repairing in CT and the boat in a race to rejoin from leg4 in brazil, the ease of the logistic burden with the long leg3 is shown. forgetting any silly stops in the middle or far east, even just the australasian ones make it a difficult challenge. Here is the container routing for the 2022/2023 race loosely overlaid over the 2017/18 route (obviously a shortcut to China was used then)

That is the race routing rather than the container routing though surely? The teams had two sets of containers, that leap frogged to reach each stopover in time, as the sailing is quicker than the shipping in most cases. Which makes your point more relevant. I don't know what they did for the Cape Verdes this year, maybe just a 20fter or a single container whilst the main ones were shipped to Cape town.

Cape Verdes was just a pitstop with no haul out / no repairs except by the sailors so I'd imagine its very possible the tech team containers skipped it entirely and only some race village things were sent out?

I would guess they still wanted some tools and materials, plus clothing and personal cleaning gear. Amazingly how quickly it adds up. I am not clear whether they were allowed any outside eqpt, or was it only what they had on board?

Only on board equipment, they weren't even allowed to take on food/water according to the NOR

20.5 In addition during a Short Stop the following conditions apply:
(a) Repairs, replacements or modifications to the Boat shall only be carried out by a Crew
Member who is on the Boat’s crew list for the previous Leg and only using equipment
and spares carried onboard for that Leg.
(b) All work carried out under NOR 20.5 (a); shall only be carried out onboard the Boat.
(c) Extra fuel, water, food and provisions shall not be taken onboard during the Short Stop.
(d) Crew Members may leave and return to the Boat during the Short Stop.
(e) Other than the clothing and personal items the Crew Member is wearing at the time or is
required to have with them (watches passport etc.) all other items including computers,
gear bags etc. shall remain onboard during the Short Stop.
(f) Guests and media may go onboard for visits or interviews. While onboard they shall be
accompanied at all times by a team member. The guests or media shall not bring bags
onboard but may carry and use cameras and recording devices.

yes, there wouldn't be container routing for the public website.

I'm not sure if it is possible to do a single container set for this race, and probably more difficult for the even shorter european legs

um ok.
There are plenty of adventurous souls going yachting and exploring these days.
As much as we can criticise the TOR organisers, fleet and schedule they have had to pull a rabbit out of a hat in difficult circumstances.

I guess the anonymous author still holds onto his VHS system because the new stuff is not that much better if you think about it. Yearning and looking at the retro "Whitbread style" race that can't find a sponsor, the demand and interest is maybe not as high in general as it seems.

Pretty sure that is Brian Hancock.

Dear TOR officials,

Regarding your official tracker, when you click on a boat icon to reveal its stats, any chance you could please include things like apparent (or true) wind angle angle and velocity?

Thank you so much,
~ Varan

I think it's not TOR, but the boats themselves which are not providing the data, I suppose so that the other teams don't see it. The exception is TM, which reports more data on their own web page here (takes a few seconds to load):
