I wanted a boat but dad just got me some wood and said build it yourself.

I did.

I put a windsurf sail on it but it needs two sails.

Can I put my pics on here of me building it and if I do can you tell me the best way to make the sails and fix it?

Do it! If this place has anything to offer it is a glut of people ready to tell you the best way to do anything!

I asked my Dad for all the things I wanted for my Birthday.

A lego car, a hotwheels kit, roller blades, a new computer, a lego police station, a lego train set, a lego airplane, a new bike....

...So Dad took me to B and Q and bought me a pile of wood.

From the truncated version of your post which appears on the Sailing Anarchy forum page - the way it displays on my computer anyway - I thought you had to find a solution for getting it out of the basement. :p It is possible to make a serviceable sail out of poly tarp; which I have read - in a possibly apocryphal account - is the no.1 sail material in the world due to the many third-world fishermen who rely on it.

4552.jpg I am cutting out bits of spine.

Not going to miss the lines again 4108.jpg

I had to rub some off because I missed the line.

4111.jpg

Had to make this bit thinner. Tried hitting it with a hammer but it didnt work.

4549.jpg

Time to screw the bits together.

Cutting out the round bits of this was hard

This thing doesnt tell you wether its going to try puting the screws in or taking them out.

I am dripping the hardener into the resin to make the fibreglass work.

I need 3 drips for each 10ml. All the maths is hard.

Counting is easy though

4711.jpg

I am cutting this to make the bottom the right shape and to keep water out of the front

4712.jpg

I am measuring to make sure I get the back in the right place to keep the water out

4714.jpg

I put fibreglass mat on this side and rubbed in the resin so it would go hard.

Dad decided to help by turning it over so I could do the other side.

As it hadnt set, it all fell off.

I think Dad should make his own boat.

Dad forgot to take a picture of the mess he made!

4718.jpg

I am screwing it together ready for more fibreglass

4732.jpg

I am shaving the bottom of the front until its flat

4733.jpg

I am flattening it until its smooth like the palm of my hand so I can fix them together

4736.jpg

4737.jpg

Now its gone hard, I am fibreglassing it to the centreboard slot

4744.jpg

I am waterproofing this as I made too much resin and dont want to waste it.

4752.jpg

I taped the hog to the panels as well.

I will have to put more resin on it to make sure it doesnt leak.

4753.jpg

Er...

I think I should have cut these to the right width before I fibreglassed them on

Dad always blames me, so its my turn

It was dads fault!

4756.jpg

I am going to bend it until the front is the right shape

4759.jpg

I put some clamps on to wrap stretchy rope around and used the jigsaw on the middle until it bent nearly all the way then left it for a couple of days so it could get used to it.

I had to cut a lot off the middle

4778.jpg

Dad said "OI - Whats that doing in the kitchen?!"

I told him it was crying outside because it thought it was going to rain.

Dad wandered off muttering "but its a boat"

4786.jpg

Now the nose is bent, I am taping the joint.

Its got to stop the water going in.

4803.jpg

I am clamping it together so it wont fall off while it dries.

4824.jpg

Its gone wrong!

The chines wont fit properly. I cut them the right width, but they wont go around the front properly and sit on the sides flat.

Dad said it was my fault for not measuring it properly.

I dont know what went wrrong - so it was Dads fault.

Dad said that if its his fault, he wont take us to Mc donalds

so we will let dad think its not his fault!

4825.jpg

I had a really good look at another boat.

They looked straight on there.

I made a new wide one to try it.

4847.jpg

It was better but still not right

I drew round the bits and took it apart.

I cut next to the line all the way up to where they go next to each other and then I cut on it.

4848.jpg

I cut the bent bit out of one of the deck pieces.

Dad will grumble about getting more wood again when he finds out

4849.jpg

The bottom was bending so I screwed a piece of timber along it to keep it flat while I got the side on.

4850.jpg

I drilled little holes with the little drill

4851.jpg

I put little cable ties through the holes to hold it on

4861.jpg

Thats two done on each side

One more to go!

Er....

Doesnt fit

Dads fault !

4913.jpg

Shouldnt have told dad it was his fault.

Trying to hold this in place with my head while I get the cable ties in.....

4914.jpg

Its on!

Dad seems to think it will leak

4918.jpg

Just making sure it feels right.

I have mixed microfibres into this so I can fill the grooves between the ties

4925.jpg

4926.jpg

Im filling the holes round the back

4927.jpg

All dry

Time to take the ties off

4929.jpg

The microfibres are all bumpy where I put them in with a stick.

Should have used a syringe

I am getting the last of the ties off

4932.jpg

4935.jpg

Ive got the tape on in here and painted the ply with resin

Putting the tape on this side now

4951.jpg

Its going to rain and dad says its now too big to go in the kitchen

So we are going to build it a tent.

I need a strong bit here to stand on.

I am trying to bend this bit of wood but its not working

4971.jpg

But thin wood will

This is a lot of strips I cut off the plywood boards

I am flattening the chines to make them the right shape

4981.jpg

I am cleaning off all the bits after dad did the chines with the angle grinder.

Dad wont let me use the angle grinder as he says its dangerous.

4990.jpg

They are a lot more flat now!

4991.jpg

I am going to fibreglass the whole side in one go so it will be nice and waterproof.

4992.jpg

Its gone wrong

I kept pushing it and it wouldnt go flat round the corners and it fell off.

4994.jpg

Its got huge bubbles.

I dont think it will keep the water off.

Dads fault!

4996.jpg

Took ages to scrape all the ruined stuff off the boat.

The man in the shop said the corners were probably too tight for the fibreglass mat to bend around. He said microfibres in the sharpest corners would help and how about using tape for the chines. He had some 10cm wide stuff.

I did the corners with microfibres.

I put them in with a syringe. You have to be very careful not to make lumps, so I didnt let dad near it.

5005.jpg

The corners are less sharp now.

Its also a bit nicer.

Dad found out I have been mixing fibreglass with his favourite screwdriver

He is grumpy again

5011.jpg

I am soooo pleased that it was dad who left the lid off the fibreglass resin tin and knocked it over and not me

The man in the shop said that the only way to get resin off is to wash it in acetone.

He also said you cant tip acetone in the washing machine or the bath.

Dad says he is going to throw his clothes away.

I think he will get very cold.

5014.jpg

Time to fibreglass mat the bottom again.

I want it thick on here as it is going to get hit each time I crash and dont want to spend time fixing holes.

5031.jpg

Its gone on much better this time

There are a few lumps but they will go when it gets sanded and if not it will help it grip the water better.

5034.jpg

Time to do the chines again.

I have painted the side with resin and stretched the tape along it.

I am painting it again now

5035.jpg

I can tape all the way round in one go.

If you lay the tape on and pull the top and bottom corners, it bends until it goes to the shape of the hull and doesnt leave any big gaps. I am overlapping the layers like you do bricks so it will be very strong.

5085.jpg

I think its time to turn it over again

5086.jpg

I am taping over the back of the centreboard slot to make sure the water doesnt flow inside. If it does its going to sink.

5090.jpg

It has stopped raining again so I am starting to put my edge on

5091.jpg

This has to be very strong so I coated the side of the boat and the strip with microfibres and clamped it on, then did the other side and another strip and clamped that over the top.

5094.jpg

I had to stagger the joins as these arnt long enough and it really needs to be strong.

I also screwed them from inside the boat.

I will cut the end off later when its all nice and dry.

5095.jpg

I have put the side tank sides in with clamps to see how much room will be there for me.

Cant wait to sail it!

5101.jpg

I am taping in the side tank. I have to be very careful as it has some gaps under it and I dont want the tape to fall out.

5102.jpg

Cutting this off while the tanks dry.

5114.jpg

It rained.

THe bottom doesnt leak.

5121.jpg

This is bendy wood

Im putting it together with microfibres

I am drawing where to cut the deck to fit

5135.jpg

I am painting the edges ready to put it on

5137.jpg

This is the wood to hold the back of the front deck

5140.jpg

The mast will lean on this so its got to be good

5141.jpg

5146.jpg

I am marking the mast gap

5148.jpg

Almost got it right

5149.jpg

Got to take it off and paint the edges and under it.

5150.jpg

5152.jpg

Ive got the edge strip on now I need to get rid of all the lumps and splinters

5154.jpg

I am painting the joints with fibreglass

Building the rudder is hard

Its heavy and there are no strips of metal to make it stronger

I think it will work but Dads not sure.

5159.jpg

There isnt any nice wood left, so I had to use an old piece for the tiller.

I want to try it, so I will make it nicer later.

5160.jpg

I am going to use my windsurf mast and sail to test it.

I am screwing a little table leg to the step so the mast can sit on it and not fall off.

5161.jpg

The mast fits and all the ropes are on

Yippee!

The sail cant turn round far enough because my boom is hitting the shroud.

I will use a pole instead.
