How the fuck do you get things so arse-backwards?

The brother with the partner and property was the nutter.

The principal seems to have gone off the rails recently .. but it is not clear what his involvement in the whole tragedy was (other than ending up dead).

What is also not addressed is why they were all tooled and ready to go at the coppers from the get-go and why the coppers were jumping the fence to handle a simple missing person's report, which I understand they are not legally allowed to do unless they suspect a crime.
