Asylum seekers to travel to Australia by tall ship, in hope of being able to stay for next 250 years

A group of asylum seekers from Iraq say they’ve heard that if you arrive in Australian waters in a fleet of eighteenth-century tall ships, you’ll be automatically granted permission to stay for as long as you like.

“You don’t need a visa. Just a tall ship and a sense of self-entitlement,” one man in the group explained.

“Usually if you come to Australia by boat you get turned around or sent to Nauru, but this is a historical loophole apparently. We’ve heard you even get free land!”

He said there was no requirement to provide any notice, or understand the local language or customs. “There’s no test or form to fill out. You just turn up, unpack your stuff and take over the country. It sounds too good to be true to be honest!”

Mr Sackville said it seemed that in the past Sunnyfield lacked effective leadership and a culture that valued protecting its clients from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

In their report on the Sunnyfield case, commissioners said Sunnyfield's then-CEO, Caroline Cuddihy, "frequently gave the impression in her oral evidence that she was reluctant to accept that Sunnyfield bore significant responsibility for the abuse and dysfunction that took place at the House".

On Wednesday, Mr Sackville noted that Ms Cuddihy had since resigned to take up a position as the CEO of the NSW Trustee and Guardian, which manages the affairs of people under guardianship orders, many of whom have intellectual disabilities.

"In August 2022, the board in a public announcement on 14 June expressed appreciation for all her contributions and wished her well," Mr Sackville said.

"There's no evidence that Ms Cuddihy was ever reprimanded or disciplined by the board for her part in what seemed to have been institutional failures."

The $200 million we spent renting the private facility at Toowoomba was because Qld government kept delaying the construction at Brisbane , one simple decision took 9 months ( which they eventually reneged on and gave it back to the Feds to manage) .
I can’t wait for the Games with this mob in charge , it’s going to be Fawlty Towers writ large.
