I would love to know what was going through this woman's mind

Believe it or not some people seek these places out. They want a perfect cookie cutter neighborhood to protect the investment they made in the house. To me those people are missing out on what a home is. Sure its an investment, but you have to be comfortable and enjoy where you live. I am not going to move somewhere where they think a basketball hoop is an eye sore.
I don't disagree with what you're saying re: being comfortable with where you live at all.

Obviously the woman in the article was drawn to that "cookie cutter neighbourhood" enough to buy a house there, but shows no interest in doing her part to maintain that.

I guess I'm just having a hard time understanding why they moved there in the first place.

You would have no choice.

No, honee, I am completely not fuckin' STUPID enough to spend that kind (ANY kind) of money on a house in a neighborhood with a covenant. I used to live in Houston, land of covenant neighborhoods, and could for the life of me not understand why in hell anyone would be DUMB-ASSED enough to live in a covenant neighborhood. At ridiculous prices, and have some dickhead neighborhood association tell me that I can't do what I want with MY land?

Einstein said it: "The only truly infinite thing is stupidity."

Thanks, but I'll take the bad with the good.

Decency cannot be legislated, neither can morality. When will dumbasses figure that one out? The solution is called 'pride of place/self.' Works for noisy children in restaurants, too...
Yo honee, People move into these neighborhoods to protect their property values. Throw these bylaws out the window and there is no stopping your once beautiful neighborhood from turning into a slum. This bitch has 2 teenagers that are somehow incapable of pushing a lawnmower, WTF? Secondly, who the fuck does she think she is? Just because her hubby is in the Military that gives her the right to have an overgrown lawn and garbage cart just laying around 24/7? Sorry, but I have no simpathy for people like this.... they belong in the 'sticks', where they can get Uncle Joe to push up a berm to hide the lawn trash from any on lookers.

Is the woman in the article an embarrassment to you since you are also a military wife?
She's not an embarrassment to me at all. Most of us have a better grasp of what is important in life. Slightly long grass just isn't high on the list. It sounds like she doesn't have alot of support where she is. They could be at a small base or maybe moved to an area where there aren't alot of military families.

When spouses get deployed we make sure everyone has what they need. Everyone stays in touch, we help each other out and we keep everything going until the deployment ends and everyone is (hopefully) home safe. In smaller military communities the so called divide between Officer and Enlisted families disappears.

In my opinion that women is living in the wrong house. A smaller, more level yard, or maybe a condo? Perhaps the officer in question wants to play 'keeping up with the Jones' and didn't think to consider what the wife would need to do while he was gone? Who knows? Definitely not us, and definitely not Nautigirl. Most families make sure to pick off base housing with an eye for the fact that deployments are a way of life and at some point only one spouse will be there to take care of it all.

I was speaking to the Admiral's office this week.
Sorry but this translates to 'I was gossiping with the girls about this...' Everyone in the Admiral's office should have better things to do that sit around and bullshit about someone's lawn or some local paper article. Especially when that base has units deployed to Somalia (An area with warships from multiple countries trolling, pirates and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. You might not think its as hot as Iraq but considering who is at play down there you might want to keep your mouth shut unless you've been there and stood a post.)

If the Admiral ends up having to step into this you can thank yourself for having helped make something out of nothing and diverting time from important issues to deal with small minded bullshit.

Or maybe this is just how Canada rolls. Honestly I have no experience with Canadian military. Its possible that its completely different. Maybe they are lucky enough to have so little going on that their commissioned core can run around sweating each other's wives and lawn lengths.

What business is it of yours?

Hey, if their were covenants in place, and she is not living up to them, then she is in the wrong.

If there were no covenants, anyone who tries to tell her what to do should take a hike.

And I am beginning to sound like a broken record when I point out the fact, once again, that aqccording to the article, THERE WAS NO VIOLATION.

Lawns are the most stupid fucking thing any Englishman ever invented.

Each weekend, about 54 million Americans mow their lawns, using 800 million gallons of gas per year and producing tons of air pollutants. Since this equipment is used mostly during the hot summer months, when ground level ozone is the highest, it causes problems for asthmatics and aggravates other respiratory conditions.

Not to mention the amount of water used to keep these unnatural abominations could make the Sahara Dessert fertile. Then there's the runoff of pesticides and fertilizers.

The two fertilizer nutrients primarily involved, nitrogen and phosphorus, are needed by all plants for healthy growth. Although an individual lawn or garden seems small, the total area of lawns and gardens in urban environments can be significant. Runoff and drainage waters carrying these nutrients may move over hard-surfaced streets where there is no soil to act as a filter. This runoff has caused masses of agae blooms in lakes and streams.

If I could travel back in time to find the idiot Lord who planted the first lawn I'd kill him.

FTR, nowhere did I say I was speaking to the Admiral's office re: this incident. It was about something completely unrelated, and I never claimed otherwise. My only point is that in working with them in the manner we sometimes have to do, in meeting him, and from the feedback I've recieved from the Navy folks I work closely with, he is a pretty old school, by the book sorta guy, which means that he wouldn't be impressed with this on the front page of the paper.

I might have a very tiny element of sympathy for the woman if her hubby was in Afghanistan. But he's captain of a frigate that routinely puts into exotic ports along the Red Sea. He sleeps in his private cabin, has three proper meals a day, a nice mess in which to enjoy a Goslings and coke at the end of the day, and gets paid well to do so. Meanwhile, some Army guy the same age is sleeping on th ground in a forward observation post, eating pre-packaged food and getting shot at all the while trying to avoid the snakes, the scorpions and the dystentry.

As to how small of base Halifax is, it's the largest military base in the country in terms of the number of posted personnel. The MFRC whose existence she is fully aware of, is very active. If she choses not to seek help or support, whose fault is that?

That's got fuck all to do with anything! So what if her hubby is the Cpt. or your Lowly Stg Uncle. Both are away from home. Both are in the military. One was smart enough to be promoted. The other was not.

What's that got to do with your persecution of a woman you've never met for a childish complaint to a newspaper about her even more childish neighbors.

+1

Nauti, you are way off base on this one.

And I am sure the woman has no use for your sympathy.

Your mind reading skills, once again, are extremely impressive. Have you considered starting your own Psychic Hotline business?

Around here 'old school, by the book' Admiral's would take look at this article, shake his head and go on about more important business. Old school guys know what its like to lead and lose men. They know what its like for families go without a spouse. They know what its like to come home from deployment and have to visit the families didn't get their Father's or Husbands back but a telegram and a flag. Old school officers understand that honorable decorum and codes of conduct are about making decisions that risk and save lives, not about oh so scandalous lawn lengths and front page articles about neighbors that don't get along.

I might have a very tiny element of sympathy for the woman if her hubby was in Afghanistan.
I don't have any sympathy for this lady either. I don't think she's looking for any. If I had some how found myself in her situation I'd handle it differently. (Promptly plant ornamental grass that grows 5 feet tall on every square inch of my lawn... and then likely move somewhere I can handle my landscaping.)

You should definitely call up your ole' buddy the Admiral and share that little nugget with him. I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

Or better yet call up some of the family members from folks that served on the USS Cole, they'd love to hear it too.

simple question nauti.

how do you know it was the lady that sought the press and not the reverse?

if this is front page news then maybe the reporter was, (hahahaha!) chasing a scoop?

She wrote a letter to the editor. A reporter saw it, called her up and interviewed her. He asked if he could send a photographer, she said "come on over". She did several other interviews yesterday as well.

I will say this: I don't think she anticipated that it would be on the front page, nor generate the 183 online comments it did before they disabled comments on the story. I do think she could have avoided that by not allowing the photographer to come over.

You'd be okay with a neighbour who let their lawn go to shit?

And you'd embarass your husband by having your story plastered on the front of the local paper instead of using productive means to resolve the issue? Rest assured, this will have career ramifications for him given his military standing.

Woman is clearly off her meds.
How about people mind their own business!!! It's not your house, so F'off! I have an HOA that decided that they knew best. When they do not like how your siding has weathered (aluminum or vinyl, all look they same per their stupid rules), they decided that it needed replaced. Forget that the area is damp and washing it once a year helps but will never make it look perfect for more than a few months. Then they go after anyone that doesn't drive one of their parked, fully operational, licensed, tagged and insured vehicles every week as derilict! Never mind that it may only be a few years old and be legal and in good shape. It sat there, the horror! The list goes on for HOA stupidity.

I spent two years and thousand$, along with other members of the community, suing the HOA and once that went bankrupt, various members of the HOA. I'm pretty sure we could all put a thousand pink flamingos in our yards now if we saw fit. The HOA is effectively neutered to real issues like derilict cars, lawns that really are a menace due to lack of maintenance and keeping up with the small public area and dock we all put money towards.

All we wanted was to be left alone unless there was a real problem. The HOA didn't even have any hard set rules. Everything was left to "the board's discretion".

You want to govern someone else's property? Get stuffed! And I hope you brought your lawyer because I will spend my yearly sailing allowance screwing you up until you decide you have something better to do than stick your nose in my life.
Yes, but it could be in MY neighborhood. I don't want any derelict cars or unkempt lawns on my street!

Move to the ghetto if you are OK with it.
