If You Love dogs......

I'm a dog person, and I just can't imagine my life without them. When I was a kid, my parents bought Rottweiler, and he was my best friend. He was a puppy, I was a kid, and we grew up together. After his death it took me few years to get a new dog, and I adopted my aunt's Yorkshire Terrier, and he made me understand that if you want to get a friend, then the breed doesn't really matter. Now I'm adult, and I have two dogs, two French Bulldogs, and they are my antidepressants

Took me a long time to learn a lesson: don’t trust a man if he’s not a dog person.

I took three different baby gopher tortoises from Starr yesterday. They're pretty soft and fragile at this stage and she could easily kill an adult if she worked at it. These are like little dog treats.

I'm glad she doesn't view them that way, or I would never know about it at all.

Gopher tortoises are abundant here on my property but are threatened. They're also a "keystone" species because lots of other critters depend on their excavations. I'm glad I have a healthy population of them, even if those excavations are sometimes annoying.

I think I'm actually supposed to get a permit before taking them from my dog and putting them outside her perimeter, but oh well.

Came home from work a few years ago and Desmo, my lab mix, that someone threw away in the woods when she was 3 months old, was repeatedly throwing a "ball" up in the air. It was a baby tortoise like in the photo. Their shells are very soft at that stage and she was careful not to bite down and it was not injured, but I am sure it was very upset, not sure how you can tell.

Desmo passed a few months ago at 17 years old. I have Shim (does nothing but take up space) now. Someone threw her away in the woods when she was about 6 months hold, 6 years ago. She leaves the pond turtles and tortoises alone but loves to chase wild turkeys!

Being tossed can't be fun. Usually, you can tell because they won't come out. The one in the pic started trying to make a dash for it almost as soon as it was in my hand, so a lot more gregarious (or less scared) than most.

17 years is a heck of a run!

Yes, I didn't expect her to live that long, and bought a boat with intentions of leaving Jax, then Shim showed up. Desmo was healthy until about a month before I had to take her in to the emergency vet. I think having Shim around to goof around with added years to Desmo's life.

I didn't want to take Shim in and tried to ignore her but she was in pretty bad shape and I couldn't just watch her die. She had determination to find someone to take her in. Figured I would get her healthy and find her a home. That was 6 years ago and I am still looking for a good home for her so I can check out. She is not a "breed" and no one seems to want her although she is probably the best dog I have ever had. Have got 4 dogs and 3 cats over the last 23 years from people dumping them in the woods next to my house.

I am probably too old at this point to go "cruising" anyway. I didn't expect the way age seems to accelerate after 60! Need to read more Webb Chiles for inspiration.

Keep moving! That’s what our dogs are good for.

I think at this point you admit this is what's known as a "foster fail."

My very first dog was a foster fail, but I realized it and admitted it within about a day. Pretty sure I would fail again if I tried again. I'm so grateful to the woman who fostered Starr and also pretty amazed. She's a lot to handle and I have acres for her to play. This woman had her either on a leash or in her house for months. That could not have been easy. If I don't run off some of that energy regularly, whatever she last saw in my hands is going to be destroyed.

I think this is the sixth gopher tortoise I've taken from Starr in the past few days.

I haven't been taking them all that far, so it's possible that some came right back after being put outside her territory. They can be pretty determined critters.

I was explaining turtle math to my wife. They live a very long time and have lots of young, so it's OK that almost every one of them dies at this stage of life. She did that thing where she looked up what I was talking about.

She learned that gopher tortoises typically start hatching in August and go on through the fall. So I guess these are very confused baby turtles?

I know that curricanes make plants try to reproduce out of season. Maybe that happens to turtles too?
