Pull your head in Recidivist (sorry Evo) Adelaide rocks.
Excellent house affordability, clean water, lots of jobs and a great sailing scene.

Home of the winner of the most recent Sydney to Hobart, Geelong Week and current leading in the Aus IRC championship.

Adelaide knows how to brew beer and make iced coffee. Best beef in the world so what else do you need?
Less serial killers?

Exactly Grumps. I mean ok, so some guys stuffed a bunch of bodies in some barrels of acid, they have a huge pedophile ring and on average 1 person disappears each month, but we are talking about the 'City of Churches' here.

Mind you I would probably start murdering people too; if I had to drink that cat's piss Coopers all the time.

With the US housing market in the tank, and looking like it will not recover anytime soon, I am looking at the possiblity of re-locating to Australia.
I have a former co-worker who made that move in '08 after he was layed-off. He placed his resume world-wide and got an offer from a company near Melbourne. He feels like it was a great move and recommends the move.

Coming from Florida, what would you guys suggest as an area to investigate? Of course I ask here as I would want to be near a location where I could join the racing scene, and need to know what kinds of areas to research. I have a site that lists manufacturers and towns, but I am wearing-out Google Earth looking for them, and judging distances of travel.

I work in the wood truss and framing industry, with 28 years of experience. So areas with strong housing markets would be if interest, of course after the sailing.......................

I have a bit of a bias towards Queensland because I live there. In saying that, here and Western Australia is where the most work is due to minig exports stil being in demand. I will let the WA anarchists fill you in on that state. For Queensland I would look at Brisbane and the sourounding area in the south east corner or Gladstone. In Brisbane you have access to Moreton Bay and there are four main sailing clubs around the bay with a good sailing scene. To the south of Brisbane is the Gold Coast with Southport Yacht Club, sun, bikinis, surf, bikinis and more bikinis. North is the the Sunshine Coast with Mooloolaba Yacht Club and the Noosa Sailing and Rowing Club(one of my favourite places for a couple of beers)plus lots of sun, surf, bikinis, etc. There is still plenty of work around the southeast of Queensland with lots of infrastructure projects, climate is similar to Florida and lots of great sailing all year round.
Gladstone has several major infrastructure projects coming on line including a new coal loading terminal and a LNG processing plant, along with some other projects it is expected that over 10,000 jobs will created in the area. The Port Curtis Sailing is good little club and great place for beer or 50, it is also the destination for the Brisbane to Gladstone race each easter(see other thread for this one). Climate wise Gladstone has slightly varying degrees of hot and humid all year.

If really competetive sailing is your go, then my choice would be Sydney. Large fleets across a wide range of classes, plus Sydney Harbour.

Good Luck.
Sunshine Coast Queensland look at some where like Mooloolaba or Maroochydore or Caloundra should be alot like FL. infact when ever I go to FL for RMOCR I cant stop thinking about how much it feels like home.

I'm here to help.
Way back in post# H told us that he was in construction, and to be more specific - house construction of the timber variety.

Maybe H could walk into the interview backwards and tell them he is expert in reverse osmosis.

Lifeguard pay is pretty lousy but then again those Bondi lifeguards do get some nice fringe benefits.

Your call H.
Which way do I walk again..........................................

Got a reply from an inquiry I made. Sounds like they feel my skills would be of value and want more info.

They talked of a 2-3 year process, but no mention of being able to work there say like how you can get a 'Green Card' here in the US.

It is still early exploratory days in this process, but from their and all of you guys comments, something worth continuing to pursue.

How about this. If I go there my plan would be to live 'cheap', maximizing my savings, etc. to take care of things that have occured during this turn-down, and to get myself on strong footing.

How cheap could one live, say in a 1-bed, 1-bath apartment, in a reasonably decent area? Can you pick up a good beater of a car to get by for the first couple of years? Gotta learn that right-hand drive business too, right? Auto insurance?

I do not want to live like a bum, but am willing to give-up some luxury to get to where I want to be, and not burdened to keep from doing what is most important....................sailing and racing.

I'll be leaving all aspects of what has gone-on before, and will be starting from scratch, so to give a little now to gain more later, I do not mind. Had to do it already pretty much after the first wife.

Again, appreciate all the advice and help. I may have to call some of you guys on those offers.........

Oh yeah...............................any Bud Lite available?

cost of living is quite a bit more than the US. Housing is more expensive. Food is more expensive...though waaay better produce. Cars are much more expensive. A total beater is still $1500 to $2000. gas is double what you are used to.

Cheaper if you live in the country than the cities but still more than average US and in some ways muuuuch more exxy than Fla and strip clubs aren't as nice.

The working visa is less complex than getting a green card but still you need to be of a prescribed vocation or it won't be granted...details are on Aus Govt Immigration site. Easiest way is to marry an aussie........

while you may be able to find bud light why would you?? this is Awstrayleeya mate...even the stuff Lonleyboy drinks is better than that. they just don't know how to spell what it is.

oh..and the bruise was on the arse from Hosobad
