ILCA gives LPE the boot... seeking new Laser builder

Yes- but I don't believe the NA builder is a dead issue yet. However, we're up to 6 or 7 now in total builders. I, (and I believe everyone else) consider that a big win over the previous arrangement. No one is building cheaper anything's now so that's out the window. Based on what I'm hearing the new ILCA-NA Chair has a focus on District level, (which I consider grass roots) support. I'm assuming we'll hear from him when he gets back from the world council meeting.

It's quite the opposite in fact.

We'll be producing ILCAs, in North America, in early 2023.

Our first set of molds leave Wednesday bound for Rhode Island.

The last 3 years have been crazy for the class. The main builder stopped supplying and got fired, the iconic name of the boat had to be removed, there was an intense Olympic defence, and the world effectively shut down for a couple years. Coming out the other end, there are 6 or 7 world-class builders - including one in NA next year, parts are flowing, regattas are revitalizing and there is a vibrant second hand market for the grassroots sailor. And there stands @Wess, all alone with his three part vang looking for a free drink.

Old fart typing on phone while tired after long hike miles from ocean water. It’s amazing what you can do and see in this country for the price of a new ILCA boat! Heck it’s amazing what you can see and do in this country for the price that ILCA takes off the top of your purchase of a new ILCA. Even a Chinese built one! 😀

The Rockies are nice too Bill! Also got here (about a week ago prior to UT) for less than the cost ILCA takes on the purchase of a new boat!

But I would bet and agree if you are near Banff and Jasper you got prettier shots than this. Lake Louise is gorgeous in winter.

The point is there are lots of fun things you can do for less that the price ILCA takes on a new boat sale even if you ain’t sailing in ILCA events. And that I hate having my pocket picked and I like rum (and the outdoors). Oh that it’s amusing riling up the same 4 or 5 people who can’t accept that some may not feel the same way they do about things.

Cheers. Canyons today!

Maybe for less than the GP the builder has in the boat, but.....

To clear up some of your dis-information. The ILCA gets nothing from any ILCA District level sanctioned event, (which is what 95% of what all of us do) event the District GP events which is what you need for qualification for Worlds.

To clear up some of your disinformation ILCA gets a cut off the top in the form of direct fees on every new boat sold as well as sails and gear regardless of if that boat ever sails in an ILCA event. In addition to those direct (and hidden to new boat buyers) fees ILCA gets fees from builders just to get qualified to build boats I understand. Those build qualifying costs would also get passed onto new boat buyers by builders as indirect fees.

I'm really really confused --- the ILCA arrangment isn't any different from any multibuilder onedesign. The owner/licencer of the design always gets royalties etc.
ILCA is slightly different in the running rigging is so restricted that it is also controlled.
Should people anyone be allowed to build what ever boat they want with no controls? How is ILCA supposed to ensure 1 design compliance if it collects no money and has no employees? Is ILCA supposed to be entirely staffed by people that can afford to volunteer their time and never get paid?

Well they could collect membership fees from sailors that want to join the class and sail in their events.
