First colored boat out of the bonding jig. Partially obscured by the jig for the sake of modesty. Has PSA built any of their colored boats yet? If not I demand line-honors in the Great 2023 Dash For Panache. To quote Wallace "It's surprising what a lick of paint'll do."

Saw a gorgeous light blue (not ice blue) ILCA this summer at Nationals in Sydney ... but that blue you are doing there Dave looks great!

Looks like PSA produced a coloured ILCA last July.
Damnit! Oh well.

No that's a Rocket in the Fulcrum Rocket/UFO plant in East Providence. Fulcrum withdrew from the ILCA application process in the tail end of 2019 on account of the high odds of too many builders being approved. We build Rockets instead and I participate on this thread recreationally now. Given that I build hundreds of boats a year that are quite similar to an ILCA, it's a naturally interesting topic.

Fresh out of the mold this morning and waiting for its deck- Rocket Red, which seems to vary from Crimson to the exact color of fresh blood, depending on the lighting.

The blue-grey we're running really is best described as the illumination you get when the sun has finished setting but the sky is still bright. Monday's is green, with a color I can only really call Wasabi.

More to come!

Nice stuff!! I got your $$$ for the super secret project we shall never remember!!

My guess is in about 20 years the Sunfish will be gone entirely as a racing boat and the Rocket wil sorta be everywhere in NA.

Someone really ought to build a Laser in that color red.

Yeah but red is fast.

Meanwhile we’ve got another one out of the mold and I’m realizing it’s not wasabi. it’s a beguiling variant of sea foam that Porsche used on the 356 in the mid 50’s.

Calling dibs on all of these color tones. Any other builder who uses these this season is a now copycat.

I've always wanted to know, what's the process for making two coloured boats. How is the gel coat applied? How is the join between the colours done? Masking?
You can do it either way but the result is the same. Mask off at the waterline (the mold has a marked waterline in it in the tooling gelcoat for easy reference) and cover the topsides. Spray in the bottom white gelcoat. Unmask once tacky and then you can immediately spray the topside color and it overlaps the bottom white gelcoat just a little but you'll never see it unless you sand through the bottom white.
