Illinois Sweet Corn Anarchy!

So a few months ago I mentioned in a thread about Sweet Corn how you can't get real corn in Arizona. Then a few weeks ago a fellow Anarchist PMs' me for my address saying he's got a box of Illinois Sweet Corn to send me! :)

Just had to give props to a cool Anarchist who knows his Sweet Corn. What a cool community we have here...

I don't know shit about farmication but a couple of months ago I grabbed some white corn of some type from Von's and did my usual number with them on the barby-----rub with margarine, sprinkle with black-cracked pepper, garlic salt and and red pepper flakes and then wrap in foil. Damn, it was like eating bar-b-qued flavored candy corn. Almost had to go brush my teeth afterwards it was so f'ng sweet...........

Peaches and Cream corn from Michell's in Saanich, leaves on, soak in a bucket of water for 20 minutes and huck on the barbie. Dunk occasionally to put the fire out. Rip off the smoldering leaves and rub the cob in butter. Yum.

OK I'll admit I have a "porn" story.

In 1980 I was in Florida with my then GF. Her parents invited us down to a friends place in the Keys, but there was strict rules. We had to be at these peeps place at 6.30 and no later. I found this all a bit strange but went along for the ride.

Turns out they picked the porn on the way down and it MUST be appreciated within 60mins of pickin. Well it was the best porn I ever had the chance to wrap my lips around. Seriously it was PRIME porn, best I ever had.

Lesson is there is good porn an bad porn, secret is knowin the difference. And of course thoroughly pickin your teeth afterword.

In my youth I worked on a farm where we grew corn and woudl pick it by hand to sell at a stand. An important lesson we learned was that corn had to be picked early in the morning as the plant changes sugar to starch as the day wears on, meaning there is a lot of starch in the kernels at the end of the day, but a lot of sugar early in the morning. This process continues once the corn is picked but is slowed down by keeping the corn cool - not refrigerated. You would not believe how sweet corn is when it is picked and shucked and eaten cold while standing in the field at 6AM. Not that any of this is something the average consumer has much control over, but the moral of the story is to buy corn from a local stand where it really will be fresh as opposed to a mega-market or somewhere that the corn has been in transit before you buy it.

PS: I am a fan of sweet porn as well...

hehe, I grew up in Illinois and spent a few summers detassling. What a shitty way to make money, but we had some fun.

As I remember the reason had something to do with the pollenation process??? I don't actually give enough of a shit to look it up.

Oh and Illinois sweet corn is truely the best in the world. "Illini Super Sweet" to be exact.....mmmmmmmmmmm.

We used to make money "de-tasseling" corn in Illinois when we were kids. Why did we have to do that?

Detasseling corn is a necessary evil for creating high yield hybrid corn seed stock. Instead of letting the plant self pollinate, you take off the tassels to let another variety planted somewhere else in the field pollenate it. That's how you get a hybrid seed. That hybrid seed isn't able to produce more viable hybrid seeds because mother nature is a cruel bitch.

The worst is when 2 different hybrids pollenate each other and you get no corn on the cob at all. Just a stupid, worthless club. Ever notice where one farmers field ends and another begins, and the 1st few rows of corn look like shit?

Sweet Porn is much, much better than detasseling.

We just processed and froze the rest of our corn. Come January, it's a nice little taste of summer.

At least we get Porn every Friday here! Mmmm, Processed Porn...
