I understand that. Without devolving into a PA.....I'll just observe that the persons who be appointing the sheriff are themselves elected officials so the accountability would still be there without the politics. Which is the model in every incorporated city with a police force and it works quite well. I have worked for many many years.....did I say many many......with multiple city police agencies and a large county sheriffs agency. The politics associated with the campaign cycle etc is................a pain and often gets in the way of good decisions.
Your experience may differ.

Not sure about the permits required but a local self made millionaire, has a small armored collection. As well as a MIG.
He is an interesting character. Built a excavation/road work company from a single dump truck. Ran it for 40 years and sold it for a bundle. He likes playing with big tonka toys.
A lot of his stuff is WWII era and comes out for the 4th of July parade every year. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Where I live the Queen Anne's County Sheriff has been an elected position since 1706 and is independent of the county government. The current sheriff is generally popular. He has done some things that might have got an appointed sheriff fired, but then again some appointed police officials across the Bay have done a lot worse.
One odd thing related to Covid happened here - I guess we have so many bored kids that the sheriff was told a few times his election prospects would be dim if he enforced the letter of the law on what can be driven on the local roads, he ignores the kids driving various lawnmowers and golf cars around the neighborhood.

BTW my Fennel crop just started sprouting, 6 weeks after planting..... Who knew anything could take that long to germinate? If Lindsey Graham had any say in it I wouldn't be able to harvest it now....
