I'm a police officer and a swat team member, ask me anything?

So overall the police in America are incredibly well behaved, but I have no issue admitting there are bad examples out there. Sadly those are the ones that get posted to YouTube. I took 24 calls for service today, got cussed out three times and never said a harsh or mean thing to anyone beyond "don't interrupt me" to someone who asked why they were being trespassed then they started yelling at me again. But you won't see any of those calls on YouTube or the 50 something other calls my partners took.

Beyond that, most people don't understand how violence works, there isn't a pretty way to take someone who doesn't want to be arrested into custody. Sometimes it is brutal and mean. Most people don't see violent behavior daily and have no idea what it looks like beyond movie choreographed fights.

Now, as for how do I work with those people. I don't, we have one guy at our department who can be an asshole to people. He doesn't bid the shift I supervise now because I have disciplined him for his actions when he was on my shift. Plenty of good cops do all we can to get rid of the bad apples.
A guy from our local dept. got himself videod by one of these “First Amendment” activists and put up on YouTube as a fascist, Nazi inspired thug for asking for ID. He got a little ruffled in the video and forgot that you don’t need to show ID if you are videoing a police station. Anyway, he pulled me over last week and was extremely courteous and issued me a verbal warning for driving while distracted.

In the US, you have guns, drugs(especially the ones that get you super high and dangerous or just kill you from Fentynal poisoning) and violent resister to arrest. Our guys spend so much time responding to overdose deaths and administering Narcan to save drug users that I can see why they are not all like good ‘ol Andy Griffith.

And when you want to shit heavily on the police, remember this. When the shit goes very bad, they are the first call you will make.

I still feel terrible for the rookie who came to our house this past Easter night when my 8 year old daughter suffered cardiac arrest. She luckily survived, but for me to have to thank a cop and tell him there is nothing more that he can do for us as he’s staring at my almost lifeless daughter in the ER- that hurts. He then had to go on with the rest of his shift...

Then my Mom died 4 days later and the 3 officers that responded were super courteous and let us reposition her body( she had been frozen by Parkinson’s for years) to a natural position for transport and say a prayer of goodbye over her.

Is pot legal where you work. And how has that affected your work?
Medical marijuana is legal here now and most places have made simple possession a non-arrestable offense or just a ticket only type thing.

I barely mess with weed now, unless someone is causing a major issue it usually gets ground into the pavement or poured down a storm drain if they don't have their medical license.

you call police when someone dies a natural death? WTF?

there you go, a question for Mr Green.
You contact 911 to report a death. They send the police. Just because it appears to be a natural death, police are called to secure the scene while the paramedics come and try to get an EKG reading to see if there is any life. Sometimes crazy things happen at the location of a death. Upset family members can get real ugly fast.

They kept a close eye on my sister when she got there. They must have had some run ins with her- she’s a bit nutty.

Yep, he explained it well. In Oklahoma the police have "possession" of the body until we contact the medical examiner and they agree to release it to the funeral home. Then we wait until they are picked up to leave. Always sucks to spend what is usually an hour two with a grieving family.

This is only for unattended deaths where there isn't a doctor or medical professional on scene.

Ooookay, um..If someone dies at home, expected or unexpected, we just call a doctor to certify the death or the Ambo's if the death was unexpected or the police if there's no regular GP. or even the funeral parlour.

it's not law though, you just need someone regestered to sign the death certificate before the body is moved out. nothing to say you cant move a body off the floor or reposition to make things tidy/respectable.

People forget we are human, if I show up to a call and don't seem cheerful to be there it might be because I just got cussed out at the last call, or watched a person I was performing CPR on not make it.

Yup. That’s the part that no one seems to understand. You go from call to call settling disputes, trying to convince people that you are not there to harass them and dealing with injuries, disease and death just about every day. I know that when I am stopped there is a reason. It’s my job to be courteous and polite to a public servant and I expect the same. I can also talk like a normal person to an agitated officer because I am aware of their responsibilities and understand their angst in dealing with a rude public due to our first amendment rights and the fact that many US citizens read or hear on the news that they have rights. Of course, most have not read or understand the Constitution of the United States. They “understand” social media and the anti-police frenzy that is prevalent in our mainstream media.

One of my best friends is SWAT here in Long Beach, we had a good laugh last sunday over a beer talking about the best place to hit a perp with a non lethal round....fucking good times!

Thoughts?

I have many LEO buddies, everyone of them are good police.

I haven't sat on, or even been called for jury duty since I told them I was buddies with the DCOP nearly 10 years ago.

I thought it was the coroners job to determine if its natural death.............??
In the US it varies from state to state.   In my home state of Pennsylvania, if the death is unattended (that is not in a hospital or other health care facility where doctors are available) then the coroner must be notified.  However if the funeral director calls the coroner from the place where the deceased is and says he knows the family and it was death by natural causes, often the coroner will say OK on the phone and he will sign the death certificate, without further action.  In PA, coroners aren't doctors and they are elected to the job.  They are often funeral directors.  Pathologists perform autopsies at the hospital when necessary, sometimes the coroner is present to witness the autopsy.  Some states have Medical Examiners that perform the function of a coroner, but they are required to be medical doctors.  In some states, paramedics can declare a patient dead at the scene.

It is obvious to me but apparently not to everyone, that if a person dies at home, some authority should decide if the death was natural or not.  Not touching or rearranging the body is obviously to preserve evidence. Otherwise, who's to say you couldn't sit on somebody's chest until they suffocate, then put them in bed and make it look like they died in their sleep, for example.  There are many ways to kill somebody that aren't obvious except by a detailed forensic exam of the surroundings and an autopsy.  Or so I have heard, anyway.

Hey, welcome back.

Since you offered:

My wife and my 13 year old daughter are getting to the point where only one of them will come out alive.

Who's side do I choose?  I've got my money on the young one.

Used to hang out here a lot! Work and life took me away for a while, but I am back and want to introduce myself to those that don't know me!

I am a cop at a fairly small department and am on a regional swat team.

Have any questions you have wanted to ask a cop, now is your chance. Keep it civil.
hey   welcome back..    hopefully life wasn't too hard on ya...   so how's it been up there since  weed legalization..
