Back in Cali, our neighborhood donut shop was owned by an Asian gentleman. Got to know him over the years of buying Friday donuts for the team. He had escaped from Pol Pot’s Killing Fields with only his family on his back. Up at 2:30am 7 days a week, making the best damn donuts, he built a thriving business. He sat for hours behind his counter, with tears in his eyes, the day he became a US Citizen. In his gnarled hands he clutched the small American flag given him at the ceremony.

Last time I saw that flag, it was mounted proudly above the coffee urn for all to see.

We have no idea how lucky we are. He did.
Similar story here, “Goodtime Donuts” in town is owned & run by a Laotian family who came here for a better life. Super nice, I usually order to go but occasionally stay to sip a coffee and chat. SW Michigan is home to one of the largest populations in NA, many excellent restaurants.

Yeah, very similar. I was one of his first customers. After six months, he wouldn't take money for my coffee. (I started throwing my change into his youngest son's well-stuffed college fund jar. (Raised from birth on Murican beef, the kid grew tall and smart and got an athletic and academic full-boat scholarship.)) After a year, the owner helped feed my addiction to his chocolate crullers. After two years, I had to go earlier to beat the lines in his store. ;)

And I miss all the middle eastern restaurants in the Detroit area.

Where is that one? My brother in law is native Lebanese, lives in Bloomfield; I thought I knew all the good places. 😜
They started in Detroit about 8-10 yrs ago, still there (I worked at Henry Ford Hospital…a frequent lunch for us), and there is now one at 13 Mile @ Woodward in Royal Oak. So so good!

Damnit, little brother has lymphoma. Undetermined yet which sort and therefore which treatment protocol, probably won’t know for a couple more days. Going in for a full body scan and getting a chemo port installed. I guess the good news is there are several treatable versions, so we’re hoping.

Can’t do much yet but wait.

Fuck cancer.

So sorry. One thing I’ve learned…..painfully…..is we are not promised tomorrow. When things get a little rocky during treatment and beyond……it’s important to remember that each day. I’ve found being grateful for each day…even difficult ones….is very helpful.

You play the cards you’re dealt best you can.

By the way…..Lymphoma’s have pretty good 5 year survival rates.

Sorry.

Thanks, having had a couple close calls myself I’ve had a long time to come to grips with mortality, but there’s something different about the surprise of a younger sibling coming down with a tough illness. I need to spend some time with him.

Many years ago my father was bedridden for a time. He would start each day the the death colom in the paper, then have a chuckle at his name still not being there.

My Brother had is Prostrate ripped out in January. My wife just had her uterus and ovary's ripped out recently. Both had to go through radiation treatments.
They both complained about living healthy and having this shit happen, looking at me knowing I am the debaucherous one in the family (barely). I feel bad for them but there is really nothing I can do, except help.
I have told my wife that you gotta have fun doing lots of stuff in moderation otherwise you might regret it.

Last one out shuts the light off.

About 2 years ago it stumbled down the YouTube rabbit hole and now have a evening subscription viewing list a few dozen long. The YouTube AI offered this up and I watched thinking of PB and the expat Lada , our paths crossed in this world
Come a long way from my experience and training
The blood IV warmer and the drill then injection into bone marrow ( I think) was also novel for the field treatment and effective.

The Army has always been on the cutting edge of trauma care. In the field and in the hospital. Helicopter MEDEVAC, Silvadene burn cream, The Golden Hour concept, some of the items in this video and many others.
