I've apologized to Bob above. 

I have provided him (and everyone) with the source of the quote, which I saw and took from another (very prominent) posters sig file.  As such the quote has *ALREADY* been reproduced, perhaps hundreds of times here, on SA.    Trovao has over 7,000 posts.  I don't know how long he has been appending this now repudiated quote by Bob Perry to them.   I've only mentioned it once, albeit, in a thread title.  Still, my bad, and I'm sorry. 

The first person to call me (and the quote out) was ChuteFirst who said:

Here is Trovao's full (now repudiated) quote, with all original emphasis and context retained. 
 

Now, ChuteFirst has accused me of "misapplying" the quote. 

He says that the quote was referring to one thing, and I've applied it to another.  It was about racing, but I've posted it here in the Cruising forum. 

The fact that it was about racing is apparent if one goes and looks up the Rambler capsize, and sees that it was a 100' maxi-multihull that flipped in the Fastnet race.  This was apparent in Trovao's post, which  included "commenting on Rambler's capsize".   

So, if it was a real quote, then I would also say I'm sorry for mis-applying it.  But, then, quotes are misapplied a lot.  How many people know that Ghandi's famous "an eye for and eye makes the whole world blind" was made in response to him being told it was his turn to pay for lunch?  

So, it's a much lesser offense, and in fact, one thing that makes a great quote is that it's applicable in many more situations than the place it was originally uttered.   Saying "multihulls are clearly the fastest boats on the ocean now" would be that sort of quote.    

In any case, as I did not include the same level of context, I will admit I may have inadvertantly misapplied that, but that's not the same as misquoting someone - which the as Bull City has told me: Misquoting is a serious matter. What do you have to say for yourself?   

OK, Bull City. You have all the information. I've said what I have to say for myself.  It is Trovao who apparently created this now repudiated false quote. Because Bob Perry himself has said: "I most certainly did not say that."   Bull City, please take it up directly with Trovao,  I don't know why he did it.  It's a serious matter, as you say.

My daughter has a friend whose family owns a catamaran. They've sailed from North Brittany to the Azores, Sweden among many places on annual leave time. This is something you can't do on a mono, it takes 10 to 12 days to go the Azores, it took them 7, with 3 weeks of leave they can just about do it.

You are suggesting that the speed of their cat is 70% faster than a similarly sailed, similarly sized, similarly designed monohull. The universe rarely has singularities, and that might be one. The reason to look at Big Data, like 15 years of difficult-to-fabricate satellite data from the ARC, is that you get a credible result, averaged over many years and thousands of boats, in many conditions. Even in all that data, you won't find a single case of a 70% advantage unless you compare full-on professionally crewed racing multihulls against indifferently sailed, mom-and-pop crewed crab-crusher type monohulls under peculiar conditions. I continue to marvel at how much these very fast catamarans are slowed down by the addition of a 1 kg satellite tracking beacon. I guess they really are weight sensitive. 

This is about when I get called a multihull hater. Not a hater - love 'em. But I love 'em for what they are, not what they aren't.

(But we are talking about catamarans) I say maybe because I really don’t know, so I yield to your knowledge on that subject.  And yes, multihull sail craft are fastest under certain conditions that meet their best qualities.  But speed, is not the end of the race.  The race, even to those who spend millions to win a $15.00 plastic sailboat trophy, is about getting to the line first, not in the conditions that fit a particular boat, but in conditions that are presented on race day after race day, regardless of the boat type.

not long ago I sailed a super fast 100footer on a 400 mile delivery

every time I looked at the Speedo we were 15 knots plus 

it was beautiful weather, close reaching , friendly sea state … but the high apparent wind speed made standing on deck tiresome

I was in foul weather gear  the whole trip

(a) because motoring is allowed. They add a 1.2 "hour factor" - but if the wind is light that sure favours the boat that can motor at 8 knots vs drift at 3...
(b) it's not a race but some treat it as some. They charter a big boat, load it with 8 folks and press hard the whole way.  

But if you look at just elapsed finish time it does look like OVERALL the faster multis are ~faster than the big faster monos. I combined the 2021 results, sorted the finish times and ignored the engine hours; keeping them there for interest. I also discarded the few monos >80'. Like we know a Swan 112 is fairly quick. "M" = multihull

The Marsaudon cats are seriously quick. An average FP and Lagoon are average. Lots of scatter in this data. One Beneteau 44.7 was >1 day faster than another...etc

Which proves my point. The Marsaudon cats are quick, not just in '21 but in previous years. However even the fastest of them arrived on the 3rd and 4th, with the smaller monohull frontrunners arriving on the 6th and 7th. They all started on the 21st, so 12 or 13 days vs 16 or 17. Take away the TS boats and you have more or less a random scatter of multihulls through the fleet. Certainly not 70% faster. And even the very fastest of them was slower than a bicycle, averaging about 7 knots. 

I really don't care if someone wants to buy a catamaran, do what turns your prop. If you think it will be 3x as fast (as Peter J. used to claim for Gunboats), you may just be disappointed.

I don’t think the using the ARC is a silly benchmark at all. I think its the best for comparing cruising boat choices for the masses. And allowing motoring only makes it more credible because motoring is an important part of passage making.

Those results show a Catana 45 that “everyone knows is a really fast cruising cat” was only 4% faster than an HR 44 that “everyone knows is slower than the 2nd coming of christ”. 

Unfairly anecdotal? Well let’s face it, that’s where conventional wisdom comes from.
