They've already agreed their data was shit/unreliable form their last tilt at the windmill, no? Presumably, shit in-shit out - so anything their simulator thinks it saw is likely to need a re-boot. Is this the re-boot?
I'd be very surprised if their sim data wasn't exponentially more accurate than last time. T6 is obviously a validation tool along with design. There's logic in their approach.

Remember that we expect lighter winds at this venue, and waves. So the trade-offs are different this time -and more.likely to favour the W. Doesn't mean it will favour, just it's moved in that direction

I think this is reflective of a hail mary approach from the Brits. When they launched T6 they launched with foils that were VASTLY different from the foils, or foil they are currently testing. Then they lost James Allison back to F1, crashed their test boat and ended up in the shed longer than they'd planned while watching other teams make massive strides in their design progression.
T6 barely got out of the commissioning period the first time, so there is no way they would have gathered enough data from the first set of foils to validate much of anything at all, as those foils didn't see much sailing time and never met their their potential.
Wonder if Mercedes F1 team has scaled back their level of assistance to focus on F1 and now the good old yacht designers have had to take over the design program again.

They can't put more engineers on F1 because of the cost cap. So obviously not.

And the T6 is the place to test radical ideas to see whether they work. Because Sims tend to be able to interpolate and extrapolate more effectively than they can evaluate something very different

But clearly to some its one of those rare irregular nouns:

NZ have innovative ideas
Ineos have hail Mary's

Anhedral and the w foils will be better in the waves because they are less lightly to loose lift due to the motion of the wave. At the moment that appears to be confirmed by observing all the teams.

Who else has had a short-sighted farmer knock up something in the back shed and graft it onto their boat then?
KISS, heard of that? How can this Frankenstein effort do anything a "straightish foil" can't.

It might be sensible if they did it in secret but two years before the event gives the opposition plenty of time to consider it.
This is the rules they work under.
You don't give up and out the box idea just because it won't have a surprise factor.

let's go the whole hog to the either end of the spectrum..
*just because it's on the recon, it doesn't mean the other teams have a solid YES/NO input on whether to go down this route themselves.
*if it is the nizzlgism of foil options then Ineos are months ahead of the others
*if it is not, they can just talk it up and waste everyone else's time considering it whilst they park the idea in secret.

You mean like foil up wind and down, tack/gybe, like it did prior to the last cup and has since done In The recent INEOS video.

oh and it lets the inboard half of the foil sit more vertically with more Lee way resistance and the out board end sit more parallel to the surface with more vertical lift.. the kink can also allow surface penetration without the ventilation migrating over the entire foil surface too

but sure it won’t do anything useful

Apologies for my English.

Allison is not being hired as an engineer, but his role is irrelevant.
The F1 Teams can do anything they want with their money, at this time of the year with just 2 races in, they have the vast majority of their allowance available to them.
There are multiple avenues to pay for someone, even at the end of the year when they have no money left on their budget/allowance:
  • They could hire and pay the next year.
  • Use their volunteer program allowance. Although it never made it the big news, the Mercedes and Aston Martin teams had an overlap of 2 volunteers for a month or so, which is illegals under the sporting regulations, and FIA issue a minor reprimand.
  • Fire someone.
  • Cut someone's salary and divert the moneys to the new hire.
  • Hire his wife at AMG, or any of the INIOS shadow companies, pay her instead a shit load of $ and pay him a nominal salary.
  • Use any of the other avenues they have to work around the budget limits.

James Allison has always been employed by Merc. Can we just stop with the stupid omg they are re hiring him shite. He has always worked for them.

He has the role of chief technical officer at mercedes AMG with oversight on amongst other things the AC program, and the applied science division which means he gets to dip in and out of all the projects that they have going on.

as for the fantasy budget cap advice above, a child would see through that, did you give the same advice to Red Bull last year (2021 season)

Bottom Line is this:
All 3...Ainslie, Spithill and Bruni desperately trying to be the Roger Federer or Tom Brady of their Sport. They are too old on those sort Foiling Monos (AC) or Foiling Multis (SailGP).

As a Professional Athlete you have to know when your time is up.

Ruggerio Tita, who won Olympic Gold in the NACRA-17 Class in Tokyo with his Partner has to sit out because of the EGOS of Checo & Jimmy. This is ridiculous and plain + simply wrong.

Don't get me wrong: I loved Roger Federer. There will never be a Player who has graced the Sport of Tennis like Federer did. However I also say he hung on for too long. He should have announced his Retirement after winning his 20th Slam at Melbourne Park in 2018 and subsequently got back to No 1 that Spring.

So no point testing anything like new mainsail arrangements either because someone will copy them. So all the teams have it wrong.

Ignore engineering principles of evolution. Just turn up on the day with something radical
