No, of course we can't. And both boats were built very differently with different aims so there could be lots of factors we are unaware of. But certain people (mainly from a small southern hemisphere place) have been confident that they could tell by eye that the Ac40 was faster, when sailing in opposite sides of the world in different conditions, so it's funny when they sail side by side and it isn't.

And even if one is faster it tells us nothing much about the race boats that have not yet even been built

It isn't? You know that for certain? I mean you've just berated people from "a small southern hemisphere place" for claiming to, but according to you, were wrong, yet you know for certain that that isn't true? yet you've just said no one can know for certain whether one boat is or isn't faster, so unless you know something no one else does, you can't claim that to be wrong. So those people from that "southern hemisphere place" may actually be right and the AC40 may actually be faster.

Additionally, it's not that difficult disguising relative speeds especially if recon boats don't have accurate GPS data. It's a high art form in the games.
