I sailed with a guy on a tall ship. He was a taxi driver from Cork, had done a few trips on different ship. after each one, he got a tattoo of that ship on his arm. Looked fairly cool, and meant something. He was happy.

I recently (two years ago) had an incident that caused me to take stock, and I came up with a Bucket List. I didn't put tattoo on it but, among other things, I did put earring. And I got one. No big deal, I suppose.

I am with jeff - I just don't understand the attraction. I would think very very long and hard before you get one. Maybe get a henna one painted on first and see how you feel about it after a while. I know many people who regret getting one including a mates 18 year old daughter. Very attractive girl - looks like a scank with a tat on her shoulder now. Also just because you might think a tat looks good, many of your customers may think differently. I have a locked in stone rule with my staff. No visible tats whatsoever. And as they are working on yachts in sub tropical Queensland - that is not much fun! Think very very carefully first. You will probably regret it at some point in your life. You are unlikely to ever regret not getting one.

While I mostly agree with you what happens if the tattoo is medical? In some older people a small trend is developing that has emergency care information on the tattoo . Sort of like the life alert bracelets have specific information on them. A person with diabetes can have that marked on their body in case of injury. Additionally recent developments but still in the initial testing phase has a custom tattoo that can monitor your blood sugar levels. no more needles. I am not sure on where it stands currently(it might have failed). Remember not all tat's are decorations.

All that said the only place I would get a tattoo is on my feet. I can easily see them and enjoy the memory of why i got them at the same time I can easily cover them.

As an employer I don't care where you have your tattoo, so long as it is tasteful and discrete, very discrete.

The roughnecks on drilling rigs are pretty tatted up, and it really doesn't improve them. Again, if you want one, that's your business. The professional image of my company is mine. You walk in with a visible tattoo, it had better be one relating to your excellence at Dartmouth, MIT or Stanford.

As an artist, my daughter has designed a lot of tattoos on commission, yet has none. I suppose the little talk where I told her that no one on earth has a right to an inheritance, and that I will leave her share to charity if I ever see a tattoo on her, might have had a little to do with it, but I suspect not. She tells me often she doesn't even like her own work from 5 years ago, why would she make something permanent.

i suspect you are projecting. most likely if it is a good tat he will love it forever, and regret it if is sucks....i realise some people think they all suck, he obviously is not one of them. of course i am projecting as well, i love all my tattoos, except i hated the one that sucked, so i covered it with something i love, can't say that after 20 yrs i regret any of them...not even the one that sucked. if i ever lost a job or man over it, i don't regret that either.

regardless...he didn't really ask opinions on whether or not to get a tattoo...only photos of tacking duel for the purpose of designing a tattoo.

hope it turns out great MoMP and that we get to see it once it's done.
