iPad and racing

Just got an iPad and am wondering what the best waterproof cases and racing software are? sound off
I don't know if its "best" but I got one from Trendy Digital that works well for my needs. You can't use the headset or charge the unit in the case I have but for <$30 it works for me.

I use iRegatta and may pick up iNavX.

I have raced a lot with ear phones on. Sunfish in the Barrington River frostbiting in Rhode Island or sailing with all Chinese crew that I couldn't talk to anyway racing in China and I don't put it in anything. If you think you are going to get wet then putting it under a dry top and having the cable come out the neck seal works. I find they are more of a problem in a bag in the boat then on your body.

Nothing like Hiking up wind with Gun's and Roses or M&M plying in your ear. :) Have fun.

www.lifeproof.com they make cases for both iPad and iPhone 4. Basically a waterproof Otterbox, saw it in a SW issue a few months back, it'll be my first purchase after I upgrade from the little shitbox I have right now.

Also, *like* and Otterbox, except better, it fits in your pocket and doesn't stick to the fabric like Otterboxes tend to.

Let us know the results.

HW

PS they are compatible with any waterproof headphones and come with a waterproof adapter for normal headphones.

How about tearing yourself away from the iPad for 8 hours, looking around at reality for a few hours and doing some fucking sailing?

On the boats I go on, the "O' wouldn't allow a cell phone.

Why would anyone want a cellphone on a race boat?

Has anyone ever heard of the art of holding conversation?

WTF?

The OP asked about an iPad, not an MP3 player. There's been plenty of chatter on SA already about chart plotting & other apps of interest that are part of sailing, not a distraction from it. It seems like a fair question.

Not really, if it is intended to be used as a phone. That was the point along with the MP3 issues.

Have any of you folks ever tried actually talking to the guys with you?

"Racing software". If that's sailor code for "music" then I stand corrected. Sorry.

I, too, prefer to spend time on the ocean with the sounds of ocean if the other had been the topic.

Check out the Seal Line waterproof soft cases, http://cascadedesigns.com/sealline/e-cases/iseries/category

I have one and use it on the boat all the time. You can also rig a neck sling for the case when you need you hands free.

Oh yea, Made in the USA!
Yes. A neck sling. The only thing better than staring at a computer on the boat all day is adding the risk of strangulation.

Is there an app that gives you a sunburn and messes your hair up as if it had been blown by the wind? Maybe one that gives you a white polo shirt with a boat name embroidered on it?

Wow, what a bunch of technophobes.

The OP wants a case for an iPad, that's one of those new-fangled tablet computer things.

The software I've uses was iNavX it was nice for navigating, haven't tried it for racing.

I saw a bluetooth system that had all the data on the pad from the boat system on a B&G boat last summer, it was really cool, no idea who's software but all the B&G data was there and configurable.

My Lifeproof box on my iPhone is awesome, better than the Pelican case for usability, though not as tough.

This post and the OP are not intended to spark a debate about technology in our sport. I was just looking for advice on software and cases. So Keep the suggestions coming, there have been a lot of great ones. If some of you got your heads out of your asses and actually learned to read, you would see that i was asking about racing software. Anyone know of an expedition or nobeltec type software available for the iPad for distance racing? Using phones for outside contact is illegal in every race in which I have competed and the IPAD is not a fucking phone geniuses. To those who seem to be caught in the stone age and are desperate to keep the rest of us there: technology has become a crucial tool in our sport, get with the times or enjoy watching everyone else's transom. If you dont like it, this is not the place to watse our time. PLEASE ONLY RESPOND IF YOU HAVE ADVICE ON SOFTWARE OR CASES FOR THE IPAD!

Navy Seals use this: http://drybags.com/product/FGW-GRID.html (According to the MFG web site) I use it all the time and it has proven to be extremely useful. Keep a little extra air in the bag and it'll cushion the iPad from crashes.

For software, start with iNavX and iRegatta. See the AP Store.

No version of expedition or much of anything like it exists yet, email Peter Isler and ask that they do it (you'll be one of a LARGE number of folks who have done so). So far, it's looking like Expedition uses too many weird PC internals to be easily ported to iPad.

Of course, you could use your iPad as a phone with Skype.... just don't tell anyone.

We make a Wifi Box that will get the information from most types of boats instruments to the iPad. I use it with iRegatta and iNavX as well. Both of those apps though need 0183 Data to work. For Raymarine Seatalk owners there is a $160 converter that will make the Seatalk wind and stuff and convert it to 0183 so you can use those apps. If you have something like Ockam or B&G many of those instruments have a consolodated NMEA 0183 output that is great to connect to for streaming data.

The cases and apps will get better as more folks use the technology. Check out our stuff if you like at www.dmkyacht.com/iregatta. You will see us as an SA advertiser as soon as we sell a couple more of these.

I got the one on the left side of this page: http://www.dndistribution2011.com/

(The non-military grade one for $80.) Hard to justify the other case they sell which costs as much as an iPad. So far it seems ok but I have not had it long. Does not have the audio cable access, but thats ok for me. It feels quite rugged and like it could get dropped without damage to the iPad. Took about 3 weeks to get it from them.
