It's Time to Reconsider Florida

It's time to consider how our actions bolster what is going down in Florida.

Yeah, we attend our events and have our fun, while their governor and legislature continue to trample on individual liberties, thought and expression. The state has become a breeding ground for hate, misinformation and violence.

The sailing community is generally more "progressive" and certainly affluent than the typical American. Could we not send the state's leaders a clear signal that we disapprove of their behavior by no longer attending events there until certain changes are made by withholding our not-inconsiderable financial investment in the state?

Would you support such an action, and if so, what changes would be needed to bring you boat/crew/business/$$$ back to Florida?

I'm sure there are many less hateful states who would be happy to take up the slack...

Because of its geography Florida has never been a good place to sail

not much you can do about this

Florida is the land of small motorboats and folks who like fishing

PHRF used to be huge Here. But times change and at least around here people found different things to do that don’t take a whole day to two or three, and there is the heat, didn’t used to mind it 8 hours on a boat but now I do. I grew up in Marblehead so I was totally spoiled but I bet if sailing was year round participation would lag…

Most people here either have a small sailboat or a power boat. Those who have larger sailboats rarely take them out because Charlotte Harbor is so shallow that you're constantly looking at your depth and can't enjoy the sail.

Compared to the bay side of the Florida Keys, Charlotte Harbor is a deep water paradise! 😂
But as someone else stated, you need the correct tool for the job.

Hallofucking luya!!! Somebody finally said it! Who would want to sail in WARM gin clear water and nice weather 350 days a year??!

And worse: Islands islands islands within a day's sail into a friendly foreign country!!! With lobsters!!! There oughta be a law against a place where you can sail a very short ways offshore and catch a free 3.5 kt boost up the entire east coast and beyond. It's just wrong I tell ya!

Or ... maybe Slug is just a dumbfuck?

I've been up and down the west coast as well and out to the Tortugas. I've really enjoyed the way one can take a short cut across the state by boat. I was able to sail a lot of it too.

Good thing some of us are easily pleased.

Horses for courses. I came from Galveston on my 2' max draft Wharram cat [the precursor to the Gunboat line] up into Fl Bay then on to Miami. I ran aground only once. It was awful and the wife's fault to boot. I had to get out into 85° water and push.

Woe onto you for sailing the ocean blue.

I remember a decent sized Wharram in Galveston about 20-25 years ago. Possibly your Wharram?
