It's Time to Reconsider Florida

billy backstay

Backstay, never bought a suit, never went to Vegas
It was a brother in Miami that was one of the people they contacted 😉

Thank God!!! Florida is still safe, but for the wild gators, cougars, and pythons!! :ROFLMAO:

while their governor and legislature continue to trample on individual liberties, thought and expression. The state has become a breeding ground for hate, misinformation and violence.

You are going to have to give examples, with cuts from actual legislation - not what you heard on MSNBC or "The View"

I'd be more afraid of the Couguars, the others you have a fighting chance.
The Couguars, you lose your house, new car, yacht.
The others you have a fighting chance.
You're picking the wrong ones.
With many of them, you get to enjoy their ex's house & yacht, and if you play your cards right, his car too.

At least, for a little while.

Today's Nature Note: Cars and habitat loss spell the extinction of the FL panther. I imagine pythons are eating their way thru the off spring of the last of the big cats in spite of a release of some Texas females to help avoid inbreeding in the small #s left. One estimate is 120-230 individuals left (2022), all of them right smack in prime python habitat.

With the warmer weather, how long do you think it will be before there are pythons in the swamps of Tyrell or Dare counties?

I don't know how to assess that beyond thinking it will happen. They can survive here now and I have little doubt that some idiots have released them in our area when they got too large. With our #s of outdoors persons there will be sightings when a breeding population gets established which may have happened or be happening by now.

They have not made it to NE FL yet as far as I know so you probably still have a few weeks.

Yep. The big event was Andrew in 1992 in Miami ... 31 years ago but hobbyists have been releasing mature individuals since first imports way before that.

We lived in Coral Gables in heavy vegetation. Several neighbors stopped bringing home dogs and cats that rapidly went on "walkabout." With new baby home in 1987 we moved a few blocks away to a less jungle-like neighborhood. Reluctantly, but shit happens.

Interesting information. I wonder if they were releases or the expanding southern population? It looks very sporadic above the south FL swamps.

That one in Georgia was right by Tarboro... I stopped there once just because there is also a Tarboro in NC. There is certainly a lot of swamp in that area, how much frost does it take to stop these things?
