BLUR is finally coming to the US!!!

Loading with Sevenstar in Palma in a few weeks and then we'll land in FL in early November. Will keep you posted on our program,

I'm looking into some alternative solutions regarding a trailer.
What would you say is the street price for a well-maintained used J/111 trailer?

It seems to be very dependent on luck and who you know. I picked up a J/105 Triad trailer with every option this summer for $3000. It was in perfect condition, but needed new tires.

How long is Blur staying in the U.S. and when do you actually need a trailer? There’s a lot of empty trailers in the summer folks might lend/rent you.

Blur has indicated in the past that the plan is to race on the East Coast, Great Lakes, and West Coast, so the trailer is to get the boat from A to B to C to D, etc... Plus if you race to Hawaii a trailer makes getting the boat back to the mainland way better (ask me how I know).

We looked into renting a trailer for a Hawaii race. That was going to be $4,500. If you can get a trailer for under $15k I suspect you would be way ahead of renting and/or putting the boat on a low-boy trailer for transport for all the miles you have in mind.

Looking forward to seeing Blur out racing again.

Lending/renting is definitely an alternative, but depreciation shouldn't be too bad on buying a trailer. Plus, we know how difficult/critical logistics is in a project like ours, so the added flexibility is probably worth it. Just need to figure out how a Swede can own/insure a vehicle in the US.

Big plan below. We'll naturally try to do more local/fun races and line up against the other J/111s if possible.
  • 2023: Bermuda One-Two (need a shorthanded challenge) + Chicago Mackinac. Winter storage in RI
  • 2024: Newport Bermuda Race (fully crewed) + more racing in Newport. Winter storage in RI or CA.
  • 2025: Transpac.
Then we're pretty far away from home :D

Pretty good list of races.

Looking to do the Transpac fully crewed or shorthanded?
I suspect owning/insuring the US will be easier than many other places.

The biggest complexity is in the US different states treat trailers differently -- being interrnational you can kind of shop around decide what state you want to be "based" in. Just make sure any tow vehicle you use has insurance that covers you and the trailer and load.

Blur, can we convince you to do the Around Block Island Race in May? Good 2 Handed fleet in that race and an east coast classic.

Maybe a bit tight with Bermuda One-Two Start to Bermuda on June 2nd?
Probably be more likely in 2024.

Blur should be mid-Atlantic now.

Didn’t realize the B1-2 was so early. Yeah no dice.

It’ll be tight getting to Chi Mac from BDA btw

When you come to Hawaii plan to do some racing here. You will enjoy the Lahaina to Honolulu race held over Labor day. I will give you some competition with my J111. Team Boomerang will sponsor you for your Transpac arrival party.

Can't wait 🏝️ Have no idea about logistics yet, but there's no plan beyond getting there.

Blur is currently in St Thomas 🏝️ Should be in FL Sunday.

Logisitics after Hawaii is easy.
Cruise / Deliver the Pacific to the East Coast Australia. Push and arrive in time for Airlie Beach / Hamilton Island Race Week. Otherwise aim for Sydney Hobart. Then deliver to NZ and sail BOI Race Week and RNZYS Squadron weekend. Then either do a race to the Islands and stay for the Groupama 600 in New Caledonia and bring back to Oz for the Airlie/Hammo leg. Options after that are sell or stick on a boat to go back north.

Genuinely interested in the reasons why?
A J/111 would make it, but it's a tender boat without much stability vs the competition. And genuinely exhausting racing offshore in a breeze. If you get TWA 60-80 and 20 knots plus it will grind down most crews... I can't count how many people who claim they have never been seasick that beg for mercy after a few hours of trying to hold on

We took it across the North Sea in 2015 (to do the Fastnet Race) and I promised myself to never ever do that again.

So there's a reason why we don't expect to do Caribbean 600 or Sydney Hobart in the J/111. Horses for courses.

That said, I'm actually doing Melbourne to Hobart on J/111 GINAN in December. They claim that's an easier race (even if it crosses Bass Straight and goes into the Southern Ocean)...
