J/80 trailer options

Looking at J/80 trailer alternatives vs. buying new.  Wondering if a tandem-axle J/24 trailer would be up to the job or a bit small / low?

Saw and O30 on a trailer that looked great, so I should probably scale up to something that size... suggestions or experiences around the room here?  thanks.

Weight wise no problem. J/24 is slightly heavier than a J/80. Trailer frame and axles will handle J/80 easily if its a properly specc'ed and maintained J/24 trailer. 

J/24 jack stand uprights may not be tall enough for the J/80 (or in the right spots..)The draft difference is nearly a foot. If you aren't worried about finding a (good) welder to do some fabrication, I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible. Longer uprights for the jack stands wouldn't be hard to do. And certainly less money than the $7-8K a new trailer would likely cost.

How much is a new trailer from Triad? Having gone through this/going through this with Melges 24 trailer upgrades and some friends having about $4800 put into their M24 trailer last month, I would think that a new trailer from Triad may just be the easiest thing you do all year.  Fixing up a not suitable trailer to make it suitable is going to get pricey and then you're going to have a hodge podge of a trailer.

How much is a new trailer from Triad? I hear ya - and do agree.  Just don't want to go there before eliminating any good alternative (that may exist).  thanks also for those other links.

Another thing to double check is that the keel will fit in the channel on the trailer (That was an issue for me). Having said that, as long as the trailer can take the weight and size, it can be made to fit. I went through the same thing this past fall. I bought a J/105 trailer to hold a Mount Gay 30. It’ll be properly modified next summer, but in the interim, you can do a lot with some wood blocks and a little beer.

You could always just call Traid, and ask what the differences are between their J-24 trailers and their J/80 trailers.  Then you'd know how much and what kinds of compromises (if any) you are making...

I didn’t either!  It was fine though. The wood blocks were screwed to the pads, so they weren’t going anywhere. As soon as the boat gets launched in the spring, 6 of the 8 vertical supports will get cut off and longer ones welded on.
