J105 Pushpit

I had minor contact at a start - idiot came barreling in late ("Up! Up!") and decided to enforce his idea of timing perfection with his sprit - without considering that if I turn the wheel right, my stern will go left and his poorly selected 1/2 boat width hole will become a 1/4 boat width hole. I thought I had it and was driving the rear corner of the boat, but he kept pressing up to avoid ramming my leeward neighbor in the ass and we got caught by a crappy wave set. My pushput hooked over his sprit as we dropped into the trough. Bent.

I emailed Waterline - their website is still up and advertising - but so far, crickets. I don't want to proactively order and pay for something at a company with alleged financial problems without some chit-chat first.

Questions: Where else to get a pushpit? Is it safe to order from Waterline and will I get my stuff?

Damage is not so bad. Bent upper rail and broken lower rail - plus some deformation of the other verticals and horizontals in sympathy with the two that actually took the hit. I could just have the weld re-done and put it back on the boat. I would not be perfect, but it would be serviceable and not too visually bad if I put my Lifesling on that side of the boat.

Even so, I'd like to get a new one if I can do it without paying through the nose or risking losing my money in the receivership mess.

You answered your own question....  beyond going to the class web site and looking for a spare, why deal....

If you really want a new one, you could try Whitewater Marine in Port Huron, Mi.  They bought Tops-in-Quality, who may have made the original pushpit (and other SS items for Jboats).

Thanks - I sent a note to their "Contact me" - we'll see what happens.

Svendsens can repair or fabricate as necessary. Support your local marine business.

Yes - that's an option. They do excellent work and I respect the craftsmanship, but that option will be big $$$ compared to something off the shelf. I'm all about supporting local marine business and I'm pretty sure that I already put enough into that place to put Sean's kids through college. I don't feel bad about saving money on this one by shopping around and taking a finished unit sitting on a shelf somewhere.

when we damaged ours (hull 10) we had a spear that came with the boat....the problem was the bolts didn;t line up exactly (well, not even close)...making the job more than just replacing the pushpit...but glassing in old bolt holes and making new ones to line up with everything....

We had a similar incident 5+ years past.  Fortunately one of the owners owns a metal fabricating business that has been in business 100+ years.  Find an owner like that or look for used 105 parts.

Or...contact a local shop.  Welding and bending shit back together would be cake for most yards or fabricators.   We laugh about it to this day.  My friend/owner was in his shop staring at the pulpit with one of his mexican employees.  They kept looking at the work and we needed it done within 4 days so we could reassemble and get the boat splashed for a big race,...owner finally says,..."...you are a MexiCAN...you can do this!",  he replied in a soft voice..." I can do it...no problemo."

Who cares what it costs, the idiot who came charging in from behind should be paying for it.  Get it fixed and send him the bill.  That's what insurance is for.

Yes and no. Neither of us pursued the protest because of the he-said, she-said nature of the event. I was having a good regatta and didn't want to get tossed by accident if he bullshitted the PC, and he had his best race finish and didn't want to lose it. So we both flicked fingers at each other, yelled a lot and flew flags, and didn't bother following up.

If this was the first expensive contact I ever had sailing OD boats I might be more excited about it but, sad to say, rubbing is racing and in our fleet you're going to break stuff from time to time. Best be philosophical about it and save the insurance for really big stuff where rigs come down, water comes in or blood comes out. I'd categorize a pretzel pushpit along with anchor scratches and soggy sandwiches - just part of racing.

That being said, I have offered cash and had cash accepted for damage I have caused to other people's boats in the past - but only after losing a protest. In my view, the clueless dude in this case owes me nothing because I made a decision not to file - my call.

Actually - it's an interesting ethic that we have in boat racing. I definitely feel obligated to pay when it's my fault (as stated by the PC, irrespective of what I think really happened). What happens in, say, NASCAR when someone causes a wreck? Does everyone pay for and fix their own cars or do they have a protest committee who asks the guy who made the mistake to fork over some budget to repair the damage?

I have a brand new port pushpit for a 2001 vintage J105. My 105 was involved in a hit and run that marginally bent the pushpit. I bought the pushpit but sold the boat before installing.  Let me know if you are interested.
