Had one a sold it again. Looked so close to the class jib I thought what's the point, just fly jib. Need additional halyard and I just couldn't see the difference really.

I have one and it works in limited applications. The boats sail deep TWD's for optimal VMG running which limits their effectiveness. If you are doing point to point distance races with longer reaching legs where you are sailing less than 150 TWD then I think they can come into play. Much deeper then that I don't feel the speed advantage outweighs the complexity but I will say I use both a spinnaker staysails and also a GS effectively at times

Thanks all,
Historically have used Spinnaker Staysails on bigger boats hence the question. Boat is no longer one design as we race inshore and offshore under IRC our main competition are J109s, JPK 1010s and Sunfast 3300s specifically for the Fastnet. We have a choice of Masthead and Fractional Reaching & Running Kites and Code Zero.
Thinking was to fit a padeye plus tie brace behind foredeck cleat and use spare genoa or fractional halyard for hoist. Quite a few J109s and new J99s are now flying staysails in combo with kite or Jib Tops to good effect with apparent breeze 10 forward to 25 degrees aft

Cheers

We've used staysails quite a lot; on the J/109 the effect was huge, and on the J/111, it's noticeable. We're seeing 2% better VMG in 6-17 knots (when the jib stays up and we plane).

No reason a modern staysail shouldn't work well on the J/105?

For the Fastnet, most all the SunFasts and JPKs will have spin staysails and probably most will have Genoa staysails too. We fly one or the other at every opportunity.

Our J/105 has one. No padeye but just a line "bridle X" formed between the forward cleats and chocks. Have discussed a padeye, but more holes... Seems to work in a limited wind angle range. Agree with the 1/2 knot when up and 1/2 knot when down comment. ;)

One problem is that a big furled jib right in front of a staysail really cocks up the air flow. You probably want to drop the jib if you are doing a longer run and want to play with a staysail.

Anyone on the forum experimented with Spinnaker Staysail on an IRC rated J105?

If so anyone have pictures of foredeck padeye and Tie rod to fore peak bulkhead ?

Not me !

I can take a photo of padeye and tie rod system used for a storm jib though (actually has a separate inner forestay).

Personally if I was looking at modifications for passage racing I'd focus on outboard sheeting options for jib, next a code-zero (105 is dire upwind in lightair so that would help for anything other than a true beat) and then a jibtop

EDIT: I found the fractional kite pretty much useless on my 105. Very occasionally we used it as a chicken chute but effective wind range was very limited. Money would have been better spent on a jibtop or more masthead kites. Do you have a proper #4 ?Also whilst talking about offshore mods I would try and look at how to reduce amount of water that comes in through bowsprit (will take photo tomorrow of carbon "gaiter") and it's worth drilling limber holes in berth bulkhead as there is no way for any water to get out. Also cover forepeak cushions or they get soaked and heavy (IRC rule says they must stay in place otherwise you'd just move them)

Deck padeye for storm jib forestay. This is anchored via some rigging wire to two fittings attached to front bulkhead and accessed from anchor locker (can photograph this if you wish didn't have time today). Personally I'd think a strop could be attached to bow cleat for a staysail as not so loaded. Note the two rings are for jackstays
