Of course there will be pressure to return to Auckland,
From where? There will be no space in Auckland and no money. The government would be unlikely to offer to go back into what would be a bidding war with other cities.

The cup will never be back in NZ. Once this team loses there won't be another NZ team in the foreseeable future.

If we get a change of Government, the politicians' appetite for tourism investment may well change all that. I wouldn't write NZL off just yet. You also sound a bit bullish for an NZL loss. That's a shame.

Can't see either government wanting to get into a bidding war. A one off offer, immediately accepted, maybe. However last time they got to look like dicks to both sides. Not enough money to tie it up, so they got shit from all the supporters. Still to much for those against spending anything at all, so shit from them. No politician wants to be caught in that shit fight.

As for the team losing, certainly won't be any tears from me. I am now a LR supporter.

Is this going to be the new French AC thread?

From the above, what are the thoughts on GD keeping it in Barcelona if NZ win again?

I think we can all agree that Barcelona is going to be BIG. The number of well funded challengers, three with experience from last time around plus Alinghi, let alone the French. As long as the sailing conditions suit the AC 72's.

Of course there will be pressure to return to Auckland, but I bet GD will have loads more cash opportinities to stay in Europe and Barcelona. More challengers interested plus better sponsorship deals. I would not be surprised that he has already discussed tentative agreements to run in Barcelona again.

It'll solve their funding issues
They'll still build, launch and test their boats locally If they win.
I'm ok with that

Hope I am wrong but this challenge looks like a complete joke so far, they cannot buy all the time already lost.
You're wrong!
This challenge honors the finest french tradition in the America's Cup (apart from 1987 and maybe before) with two main pillars : 1. start later than the others & 2. not enough money.

Meanwhile all other teams are full of French designers and engineers, we can produce them but we can't afford them!

I looked at the K-Challenge FB page a few days ago, it was all about SailGP FRA. They did include a link back-when to the Jan 3 announcement that ACE had for some reason put out. Maybe that FB page has no real authority or connection, who knows.

To be fair, if you were looking at being serious contenders for AC38 then it's probably money well spent to enter into the AC37 to have access to all the recon, arbitration, AC40 regatta and development(?). I'm assuming once entered you have certain commitments like a team base, AC40 regattas etc but hypothetically is there anything to prevent them NOT launching a big boat?? Start working on a simulator, sail some AC40s, get a core team established and then maybe even buy one of the AC37 boats after it's all over...

Besides: if you're willing to enter, build a base, buy an AC 40, a hydrogen boat, compete in pre cup regattas and so on, you might as well spend another $1,000,000? On a boat, assemble a team and compete in the CSS/AC proper, if you can get that far.

Peruse the protocol, particularly "Requirement to Race" and the associated penalties, which can be financial and, it appears, unlimited.

Thanks - I assumed their might be something along these lines but tbh I don't have the patience to go through the protocol...

Over there
Maybe Kteam buys the Red Bull or AM boat to thrash around this time.

Or just buy an AC40!

Once all the team AC40s have been delivered, I'm sure build slots will fill up quickly with private owners... get in line!
