They may not have learned that lesson from McCain/Palin.

Taking my partisan Democrat hat off for the moment, I think that the Palin choice was the most brilliant VP choice in political memory. (I've said this before.)

Look, McCain was going to lose. He was saddled with W the Stupid's two wars amongst other things. McCain wanted, seriously, Lieberman as his VP candidate. If that had come to pass, the Republicans would have gotten slaughtered up and down the ticket. Fine by me. Palin gave the SoCon nutjobs someone to vote for. They despised the self-righteous McCain and would have otherwise stayed home.

Yeah, Palin let the cat out of the bag and the SoCon nutjobs run the Republican show now. But Palin kept it close in 2008 and paved the way for the Great Shite Savior in 2016. From a purely electoral point of view with no concern about governance, Palin was a brilliant choice.

Haley won't matter as a VP candidate for his Shittiness. Kristi Noem won't matter. Nobody will matter. It's a different race. McCain had trouble turning out the SoCon nut job vote; again, they despised him. But Shitstain will have no trouble turning out the Republican nutjob vote, SoCon nutjob or moderate nutjob. He just won't get any independents.

My guess is that the GOP primary will have too many nuts. DeSantis wins the moderate nutjobs but Shitstain dominates the SoCon nutjobs.

Putting my partisan Democrat hat back on after taking a shower.

I wonder how many, who did not like the prospect of a black guy as POTUS, saw her performances, thought about McCain's health, and decided to stay home or held their nose and voted for Obama.

I liked McCain in 2000 but he got run over by Karl Rove's ratfucking tactics on behalf of Bush/Cheney. in 2008, no contest, Obama was clearly the better choice and I was pretty sure he was going to win.

That's a hard question to answer. But start with the fact that Steve Schmidt looked at the polls and knew it didn't look good. McCain wanted Lieberman which would have been a generational landslide for the Democrats. Palin wasn't about winning and she wasn't about the marginal Obama voter. She was about down ballot in swing states. And while it wasn't as big an upset as 2022, it wasn't that bad and set the stage for 2010 and 2016.

I think you suffer from being insufficiently cynical.
