Key West 2011

You will have to ask them on that, but yes for the free booze I would assume you need to pay. I believe they also lowered the ticket price and give one free one with the registration. We had a great time last year and other than getting the boat there (getting an oversize 34' boat there is just plain expensive no matter who you use or how you do it); once on site its all pretty reasonable. We found a condo that slept 8 for under $3k for 8 days, Coffin Marine was awesome getting masts up and boats in for less than years past; all while we got to munch on chicken, burgers, dogs and beer they provided for free. And even the marina dockage folks significantly dropped their price for the event.

There are lots of people who complain about this and that and its too expensive, but it can be done for what ever price you want. You can do 5 star or well maybe 2 star. For say a Melges 24 without getting there or food you could do it for under $3,500. Now 4 people 7 days.....hard to do a family vacation for less than that per person per day. And no I am not being a sock puppet for Peter or anyone else. I truly feel that a strong Key West is good for our sport and we all need to do what we can to get people there; whether its PHRF, Melges 24, 105 or IRC; the more the merrier.

So for free booze you have to pay? Then is it free? I'm just sayin' . . .

I see on the front page that Clean is still doing his best to promote the sport of sailing. Go to KWRW and get Dengue fever & die.

That reads more like the Ed's work. He needs to get over this one.

Like most others, I'm happy to see KWRW is on the rebound.

Why 'stooped to a new low?' This is big news on every major news site, and it's directly about the venue of an event that is one of the biggest in North America. Are you among the folks that thinks that this kind of thing should just be swept under the rug?

We have said a million times that Key West is one of the best places to race in the country. External issues like the dengue threat, years of mismanagement and ridiculous costs don't change that, but ignoring them is lame. If Premiere had pulled their head out of their asses when anarchists first started complaining, they'd have avoided being the most down regatta in the US. Years later, they've finally taken the approach that so many previous participants suggested, and whether it is too late or not remains to be seen.

Anyone notice that Premiere just moved their dates for Miami Race Week to the weekend of the Bacardi Cup, guaranteeing a solid crew conflict with the Melges 20 and 24 fleet sailing on the same weekend? They don't even have a website up for it, but sure enough, the dates are now the same. But I could swear that Miami was a week earlier the last time I checked. Am I crazy?

What I hear is that Dengue is not generally fatal the first time you get it. A second time is often fatal. It's present in Singapore, doesn't stop people playing golf for example. It's carried by a specific mosquito with white markings on the legs (photo from Wiki

You've got a bug up your ass about Premiere, and you take a jab at them whenever you can. You're not fooling anyone, and we're pretty sick of it.

We could've taken jabs at Premiere five times in the past year when each Dengue article came out. But we didn't, and in fact we didn't write anything about them over the past six months at all, leaving Premiere to its own devices to see how they'd handle their failures of the past two years. In fact we waited until the CDC confirmed that the number of cases doubled from 09 to '10, and stated that they were quite worried about its spread, which even fanboys can't argue ain't news. Sorry you don't like the news, but a dengue epidemic that the CDC is worried about would be irresponsible as hell not to report. Then again, most of the other US pubs are sponsors of Key West, so they certainly won't do it. You obviously wouldn't either - better to just stay quiet than tell people about a potentially fatal disease in Key West?
