If a woman can't handle a lever action carbine she has no business with a big mag semi auto .223. Yes they are easy to shoot and they are very dangerous to everyone around them. A tommy dogballs will stop anyone not wearing armor and much less likely to kill the neighbor sleeping across the street. Unless something has changed professional hitmen still prefer the .22 to get the job done.

I stand by my position that no normal person needs assault type weapons and support a ban of their sale. Not interested in debating this so consider that before responding as I have written all that I intend to.

I have had many good gun conversations here, despite owning guns and being a neanderthal (and being in favor of reasonable restrictions on firearm ownership and use). Typically I don't bother talking about school shooting-related gun restrictions (or CRT, or school book bans, or school sports) with those who have no children in school or likely to be going.

Parental education
Better universal healthcare
Better socio-economic opportunity
Firearms safety training
Targeted Gun Regulations

Tougher laws and penalties against violence

Sound like a strong Democrat Platform but R's would fight to kill every single point.

No, it's bullshit that we are going to somehow figure out the "root cause" of a certain percentage of humans being unable to follow society's rules, and the damage they are able to cause when they decide it's time.

The ONLY true path out of this mess must involve far more than just more "reasonable" gun restrictions. It must involve a holistic "Whole-society" approach that tackles the root causes of why this violence occurs in the first place at the level that it does.

And something like that needs to be on the level of the New Deal, Great Society, Apollo Moonshot, etc. level of commitment from the entire country. But frankly, I'm skeptical that we have it in us to do that.

It a very wide path, but you must take all or most of the avenues for it to be successful overall. Choosing one and ignoring the others will have as much success as moar gun regs alone.

If you leave any one out, the whole thing falls apart in the end.

And yes, this would take a YUGE commitment from a greater majority of 'Mericans. Which is why I said I was skeptical we had it in us as a society to make those sorts of commitments and sacrifices.

I agree with this whole list, but don't see much here that's chipping away at the number of guns in circulation (is that the targeted gun regulation part), which is one of the basic problems. Some could be bundled, poverty reduction and education and universal health care access and better economic opportunity all go hand in hand. It also means raising taxes on the wealthy, which will nowadays piss off ~40% of USAnians (and the 40% that more reliably vote).

Would you agree with mandatory training before allowing purchase of a firearm?
Would part of your tougher laws and penalties against violence be the taking away firearms from people who make threats or are judged to be a risk; ie "Red Flag" laws? Is it possible to persuade the more sensible and responsible of gun owners to get on board with some of these?

I doubt we can do all of this, but the more steps we can take on most of it, the better.

Have told this many times but my brother was the poster boy for the NRA and owned everything you can think of and was ready for anything including home invasions. One Friday evening he went on his back patio and used his ankle holster .38 to end his life. His kids asked me for help in selling his collection and I said get market prices for everything including reloading equipment and his friends will knock down your door. Just get a fair price. Didn't take long. I chose not to partake.
