Are there any newer boats that basically fit the Laser 28’s attributes; light enough to trailer, reasonably fast, has a decent cabin including a full head and even standing headroom.

Am aware of the C&C Corvette and the Hobie 33, while being nice boats, they do not fit the criteria.  Not interested in water ballast.

What am I missing here?  As far as I know neither the C&C Corvette nor the Hobie 33 are water ballasted, unless you consider water n the bilge to be ballast.

I think water ballast was a separate topic.

I agree, but how did the corvette end up in a conversation about boats like the laser 28?

Because I made an error. The boat I should have mentioned was the Mega 30.

My apology for the confusion.
Ah I just assumed it was because of beam, which these days is the limiting factor in trailering a sailboat any distance.  A Pogo 30 is certainly light enough to be towed by a full sized pickup, but it's beam would be a major hassle.  Even a Laser 28 would need permits to haul.

There was a fully refurb'd Alberg 30 up for sale this season and one of the questions asked was "Why would anybody pay that much for essentially a CCA hull that wasn't even that quick in the 60's?"

The ability for an 8'6"/2.6M boat to sail around the cans or even OD races all summer in the Great Lakes or the Chesapeake, then trailer behind a pickup down to Florida has it's merits and rather rare.

You might consider the Dehler 29. Little more comfortable down below, and quick (particularly with the deep keel). May not be towable at 6800lbs though. Enjoyed mine...

Better looking too IMO.

I've never been a fan of the Laser's looks.
The looks were a little wierd, but it grew on me.  If you consider that it has an extra 3 inches or so of freeboard above the hull deck joint, it's amazing that it looks as good as it does.  every other boat with that feature looks absolutely hideous.

Roger Martin's Presto 30? A different sort of boat, but definitely trailerable.

Also, I'm pretty sure I remember a picture of a WylieCat 30 on a trailer. Disp is only about 5500 lbs.

The S2 7.9.

Draft is the key for launching-ramp trailering. A neighbor with a Merit 25 at 4' draft was able to ramp launch.  He dry sailed from his home and sailed regularly.  My Dad's Laser 28 at 5' draft was just too much.  Maybe at just the right ramp and with a lot of coaxing it would be possible.

Unless the ramp sits alongside a crane, or a travelift.

Here's my old boat, trailered that thing all over the place. I wouldn't recommend it based on the op criteria.

It was a handful, especially heading down to San Carlos, or up and over big mountain passes.
