Laser / ILCA class legal sails. Pryde or North?

I am aware that the talk around the various manufacturers of ILCA hulls is that they are pretty even.

Any recommendations on sail manufacturer?

I like the way the Hyde's used to set up better than the look of the Norths.  To me there was something different.

I'm not sure about the Pryde sails.  We just bought a bunch of Prydes for our Elliott 6meter sailboats but we haven't seen them yet.  If I was buying a new sail, and I plan to soon, I'll buy a Hyde 7.  If it's only between a Pryde or North, I doubt you could go wrong either way.

I have an Olympian friend who prefers Pryde.  I've not used one.  I've had a North and a Hyde.  I prefer the Hyde.  From a performance standpoint I just feel like it looks better, (this could very well be in my head, but sailing is pretty mental). From a quality standpoint Hyde and Pride double stitch the part of the luff that covers the upper/lower connection point.  North just single stitches it and the thread has been known to come out.

How do you tell which brand of sail you've got? My Laser & Radial sails just have made in China on them & the red Laser patch & serial number.
North make them in Sri Lanka, and I understand Hyde are made in the Philippines and Pryde are made in HK.   Where and when did you buy them? If you bought them from LP it’s anybody’s guess where they had them made. China would be a good bet.

The Radial sail I bought at Christmas was from a seller on Ebay at a "make me an offer" very knocked down price. He had five to sell, I gather they were old stock as it has the Laser logo not ILCA. I got a bargain & from the few races i've done with it, it works just fine.

Looks like there are lots of Laser sails available on ebay at knocked down prices.

No sign of a button or patch though...this is the dilemma we're facing today between class legal sails, practice sails, and now laser sails that are not ILCA legal which I'm guessing this one is since it says Laser with a trademark.

A local guy here got caught up in this the other day.  He saw the Laser prices and didn't realize that they were not legal for ILCA regattas.  He was comparing a 2016 class legal Laser, to a 2022 non-ILCA legal Laser, to a 2022 Ovington.  He was figuring on buying the 2022 Laser until I explained why that doesn't work.

Yeah there are many knock-off ones about at cheap prices, but the one I bought was a genuine Laser Radial one with a world sailing serial number & everything!
and in looking at that ebay listing again of course it's a practice sail because no logo whatsoever.

Somewhat off topic, but the LaserPerformance website seems moribund

Very few parts and a lot of 'contact sales team'

Re the Laser side of the business, looking from the outside, they seem to have shown a text book way of how to NOT to run a business.  :(

But knowing the owners reputation, I wouldn’t be surprised if the new slimline Portuguese company is not making a profit because of reduced overheads.

Bought a Hyde. Thanks all for your input.

I'm sure this has been covered before but cannot face wading through all the Laser / ILCA pages. Should I also buy a decent second hand new cut 7 to practice with/get used to, given I currently have a tired 3.8 crosscut?

For a practice sail, it’s hard to beat Intensity.
