**Serving as as. ILCA NA officer costs the volunteer time, and money.
**Serving also sets the volunteer up to hear complaints and for the LANDT to spread lies and rumors about the volunteer
**Serving generally costs the volunteer a few friends but the upside is those friends probably weren’t.
**Serving always consumes free time which could have been spent sailing
**Serving often causes the volunteer who came in loving everyone and everything about the community to despising a small fraction of the same community whose behavior makes it difficult or impossible to continue to enjoy participation either on the shore or on the water.
**Serving in no way shape or form does anything to give the volunteer any special power or benefit
**Serving ruins otherwise perfectly good get togethers with other administrative volunteers because the subjects related to management problems detract from the otherwise interesting conversations.
**Serving means a volunteer will regularly be accosted by halfwit fuckwits who never do a damn thing for the game because those fuckwits love to try to tell real volunteers how to do the work they would never ever consider doing.
**Serving is generally followed by the volunteer backing off from the game for a few years or even forever as the volunteer’s joy of participation has been destroyed.

Glad I'm not in ILCA NA. I've found that while being a volunteer does take a lot of time and trouble, it's very rewarding.

And if you want to know how much just go look up the ILCA budget. It’s not hard to do and it’s a lot of money. For absolutely nothing that benefits entry level or club level sailors!!

Wess, you need to find someone who can give you the real costs of producing and shipping widgets of various sizes, complexity, materials and quantities. Having helped work on a few boat projects I can assure you that having direct input on widgets that the costs you see in most ILCA gear is not outrageous. What is annoying is when a block that imparts no special capabilities cannot be sourced from Harken or Ronstan which is easy to find versus some goofy looking block with an ILCA stamp on it that leaves you at the mercy of the builder supply chain.
Here's a very good comparison. Look at the cost of a new RS Aero compared to an ILCA. Then look up equivalent individual parts from both. Now that the ILCA 7 is a standard dacron weight and is radial cut it is no longer the rip off it used to be. I believe you once purchased a inexpensive non-class sail and immediately discovered the deficiencies of it. Keep that in mind as you stew over the $700 ILCA sail price, it's not as bad as you think. Here's a fun comparison, a new Penguin sail is around $630 and it is like the MkI Laser slab cut sail, not the MkII radial cut.
ILCA 7 (7.06sqm) : $675-$700
Penguin (6.97sqm) : $600-$630
Feel free to look up price comparisons between the ILCA and Aero and point out large pricing issues. It disappeared when the new MkII sail became the norm and every chandler had one for sale and most importantly LP/LPE was no longer in control of the supply chain. I do not know how anyone can justify buying anything from LP/LPE. The owner made life hard on every Laser sailor on the planet for nearly a decade, most of which I believe pre-dates your involvement in the class. If you were to show up at a major event that you spent time and money traveling to and needed a part that hasn't been on the shelves in over a year, you'd never do business with them. During that window I supplied many used and 3rd party parts to people at major events because no one had a choice. Now they do and even my two Laser's are class legal.
Except when I put better rigs and sails on them and race Portsmouth.
