If a good name for a match race is an indicator of the event's quality, we're going to give the D-Cup a perfect 10 before it has even begun. I mean, who the hell doesn't love D-Cups?
Of course, I'm referring to the second annual, Grade 2 International Match Race for the Detroit Cup, which takes place just yards from the infamous BYC bar on the Detroit River Thursday through Sunday. The event is sailed in the club's Ultimate 20s in full view of a crowd of spectators, and last year's final day saw some 400 onlookers watching the drama as Simon Minoprio beat Brian Angel for the inaugural title. This year the ante has been upped, with the winner receiving an invitation to the World Match Race Tour event later this month in Brazil. Not a bad prize!
Minoprio isn't back to defend, though three Kiwi teams are, as well as a bevvy of up-and-comers including Anna Tunnicliffe, Nate Hollerbach, and young Taylor Canfield from the US Virgin Islands, as well as more experienced vets like multiple Women's Match Race champ Sally Barkow and rules guru Dave Perry.
Probably half the fleet are SA members, friends, or fans, so we decided to share their racing with you. Tomorrow, for one day only, On-The-Water Anarchy will bring you 100% live, high quality webcast video of the entire day's racing at the Detroit Cup.
