living in a lighthouse

This one is in a far less dramatic setting than many lighthouses, but it is still a beautiful place.  Presque Isle State Park, Erie, PA.  The lighthouse used to be available to rent as a house but has now been turned in to a permanent tourist attraction and isn't used as a residence anymore.

Long time ago (30 years at least) I spent a week in the Haig Point Light House across the sound from Hilton Head.  Creepy place late at night in a thunderstorm.

I would love to see pictures of some of them under construction.

There are problems popping over to the pub for a quick pint sometimes....

Seguin Island Light is 3 miles out from the mouth of the Kennebec River here in Maine. Every June the Friends of Seguin Light interview couples who are willing to commit to living in the lightkeeper's residence for the summer to do island maintenance and lead tours for visiting yachtsmen and tourists.

Once a week a boat brings the couple ashore to shop for groceries, do laundry and just get off the island. No couple has ever returned for a second summer.

One summer they selected a young couple who had applied on a whim even though they were only in the earliest stage of dating and barely knew each other. Within 2 weeks they weren't speaking to each other but were contractually obligated to stay until September. That must have been one long, cold summer.

We visited in late September one year, after the keepers had left. The veggie garden was absolutely chock full of beautiful, ripe lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, radishes etc.

We had a wonderful Seguin salad with dinner that night in the anchorage. Still wouldn't want to live there though, even in the summer.

Never-before-seen images showing how fearless workers laughed in the face of health and safety to build the iconic lighthouse at the base of Beachy Head cliffs have been found.

The stomach-churning pictures depict the brave engineers risking their lives by scaling rickety ladders fixed to the sheer 500ft cliff in East Sussex to reach the building site below.

Others show a group of men hitching a lift in an open-top cable trolley from the cliff top, with two of them precariously perched on the outer edge.

The workers were lowered down to the bottom of the 500ft cliff inside this cable car skip

Looks like they were bought by an archivist org and available to the public

The only lighthouse in our part of the world (as far as I know) is in private hands. Charles Butt (see below) has owned it for decades and still does as far as I  know. It is across the ship channel from Port Aransas.

Clare Island Lighthouse - Ireland.

Never been, but a dramatic place to be in a big Atlantic storm.
