Over on the Mistress Quickly - whatever happened to her thread I mentioned that I had an magazine article featuring Rob Stirling, Bobby Holmes and John Steamer Stanley. Way down the back of the bottom drawer in the filing cabinet where the light rarely penetrates, I found the pages from that 1976 "fashion" shoot on Sydney Harbour and present it for your amusement and perhaps a bit of history. I kept the article because my late father bought the Peterson 30 Half Tonner used in the shoot from Bobby Holmes in December 1976 and had her delivered to Melbourne by Bob Judd in January 1977.

Anyway, here goes...

Jeez, I reckon those guys would have been bagged out badly over this photo shoot

Mind you, when I see Rolf Harris' latest British Paints advert where they show him wearing his yellow Taft wet weather from the 70's, I do wonder where everyone's old Taft gear got to. I remember when I first started sailing I had a Taft life jacket and a plastic Taft smock that kept the persperation in so much that you were as wet on a hot day as if you'd had a capsize !!!

Taft went the way of many manufacturing businesses.. Original owners were going under and sold it off cheap. New owners tried to resuscitate it by diversifying int baby clothing (Baby Taft, etc) but local manufacturing costs meant they lost out to cheap imports. Eventually all that was left was the trade mark and that I think was sold off to some conglomerate for a song and the brand just died.

They may have dressed like escapees from the Gay Mardi Gras... but those three guys sure could sail.

Wait wait wait!!!

Is there a guy sporting a "Look at me! I'm as cool as Ted Turner!" engineer's cap?

Needs a Gone With the Wind mustache.

In the '70s there was a guy in southern California -- couldn't sail worth a crap -- who owned a heating and air conditioning business. He had the full Rhett Butler mustache / Engineer Ted cap thing goin' on. I occasionally still spy that look. So awesome!

Of course, there's always the cruising boat guys rockin' the Greek fisherman's cap. I hear they get massive quantities of poontang!

Happy to be corrected but that looks like Bob Holmes ex 18 footers skipper and John "Steamer" Stanley in those pictures. Not sure on the others but is probably taken before my time.
