Typically, a plea is made to secure a lesser punishment. The benefit to the prosecution of securing a guilty plea to sedition is that it can now be used against bigger fish as BM has suggested.
Good Lord, but you are predictable.

I am sure Mr. Bertino looked at the charges and evidence against him and decided to plead to the most serious charge. None of that "plead to a lesser charge" stuff that typically (always?) occurs.

My sure he took the deal that offered him the least punishment.

Here is the plea agreement for this case. Interestingly, he pled to a possible 20-year sentence, but the contract states his offense-level punishment is rated at 27, which will earn him a penalty of 51 to 63 months in prison (page 4).

Edit to add: The judge is not bound by this contract and can impose the complete sentence at will.

In offering a plea for a charge such as sedition, one must be concerned about the alternative, eh?
A plea can also be offered as a means to avoid a drawn out trial process in return for a reduced sentence, not necessarily for dropping a more serious charge.
