A brief search suggests the fake bombing was a fish story. Wooden bombs existed for training, and wooden bomb like floating flairs were used as 'drift markers' for rescue and retrieval work. Both sides built their share of fake targets. The fake bombing, if it happened, was done at a without mission orders. Stories told by aircrew vary in date and location but begin in the desperate first year. Perhaps late in the war an aircrew actually did it for real. When targets were becoming scarce fighter bombers were often sent on patrol to look for targets of opportunity like still running trains or trucks. Maybe a reconnaissance bomber had a bit of fun after Germain defenses had been degraded. I can't see anybody risking death and equipment on a fake mission. It almost certainly didn't happen in 1940 or 41 as some pilots claimed.
