I could be biased. At the Top Hat club in Song Tan, Korea there was this beautiful little Juicy Girl* named Butterfly. She was petite, and had very long dark, curly hair. She was by far the prettiest girl in the club and that little lady could dance. At the end of her set, this song would come on and she did this incredibly sensuous dance, ending up completely nude, doing a handstand with her back against the back wall of the stage. It was a memorable performance to say the least, and a real crowd pleaser.

There were about a dozen or so of these clubs right outside the gate, along with shops and restaurants that catered to the Americans. American women were welcome in the clubs. My ex-wife and I frequently went to the clubs as did other married couples. We became friends with several of the girls. One Korean dancer even invited us to her little apartment and cooked us a very nice Korean meal. Butterfly and some of the other girls would often sit with us and not demand any drinks. Butterfly was a very sweet girl.

*Juicy Girls are girls that worked in the clubs outside of US military bases in Korea. The clubs operated under a special license, only American patrons were allowed in, they were off limits to Korean customers. The girls working in the clubs were Korean, Filipina, and Russian. Some of them could actually dance, many of them just stood on the stage an wiggled. They wore mini skirts, s hot pants, bikini tops, gogo boots and the like. Nudity was optional. Between their appearance on stage, the girls would circulate around the club., They would sit at your table and ask you to buy them a 'Juicy'. It was a fruit juice drink, it was up to the girl if they wanted alcohol in it or not. A juicy cost around $10.00, the girl got half of the money, the club owner the other half. The girls would flirt, sometimes get touch feely with the guy, and try to get the guy to buy them as many juicys as they could. Prostitution is illegal in Korea. The girls were not allowed to engage in sex, but the rules varied from club to club. A quiet negotiation with the ajima (grandmother) behind the bar could sometimes result in a meeting in a nearby apartment for the right price. On occasion, some of the GIs would buy out a girl's contract and shack up with their yobo (sweetheart) in a small apartment. Some of them even married the girls.



The clubs closed at 1 a.m. the GIs had a curfew and had to be back on the base by then. After a drunken evening near curfew time, there would be lines in front of the various food carts on the road that ended at the gate to the base.. Nothing like a Miss Kim's burger on a bely full of alcohol. Who knows what kind of meat they were made from, the frozen 'meat' patties were white when Miss Kim would throw them on the grill. Topped with a fried egg and shredded cabbage, and some kind of sauce, they tasted great, but I never ate one when I was sober. I don't think anyone ever did.

Overall the 2 1/2 years I spent in Korea were interesting, fun and fascinating. We became friends with several Korean people, they are very nice, kind, friendly and generous people when you get to know them.
