So this photo is not good...

But why? Is it the aluminum looking wire? I didn't even know that aluminum wire was a thing.

After first moving in to my current house, I discovered aluminum wire while installing the new dining room chandelier. I became nauseous almost to the point of puking.

I bought the special wire nuts and cu/Al compound and special co/alr outlets and switches and re-did everything. Still couldn’t sleep at night.

I got to leverage my drywall repair skills by carving walls open and replacing all the aluminum wire with copper.

Yep, the dissimilar metals between the wiring and the things they are hooked to sets up the problem. Several developments in our area had aluminum with copper pigtails for the hookups. Problem then became at the connection between the aluminum wire run and the copper pigtail. There are some newer connections that isolate the two when connecting but then you still have to expose the end of the pigtail.

it's not an easy solution by any stretch of the imagination.

I thought aluminium electrical wire was banned decades ago.
I don’t mess with electrical, just one of those things someone knew and was anxious to work on so I stayed away. That said I think the 120 year old house we sold 15 months ago after living there for 40 years was 100% aluminum romex . The guy we bought it from was a electrical contractor and had rewired the whole house late 70’s. Just another reason I am glad we sold when we did, I am certain we would not be able to find homeowners insurance after hurricane IAN . We were already getting raped paying around 7K because of the age of windows, roof et al. Even though those things were in excellent condition. The roof was metal interlocking shingles that were probably put on over the original Cedar shake roof still visible in the attic. The metal shingles need to be painted every 10-15 years with that silver looking bridge paint and the roof would last for another 100 years if maintained .

Aluminum wiring, like Jimmy Carter, was a bad idea of the 70's. Its use can lead to overheating of the plugs, switches and connections and cause failures and fires. Once overheated, an aluminum connection is on a sure path to failure.

When house shopping, I removed the deadfronts of the panels to look for aluminum branch wiring. One house I really liked had aluminum wiring. I closed up the panel and told the realtors we're done here: I'm withdrawing my offer. The owner's realtor later called with a much reduced asking price. However, I flatly refused to have anything to do with aluminum wiring.

Aluminum wiring is still being used in construction for the larger electrical panel and subpanel feeds. That can be done safely, if done correctly, using proper fittings and sufficient care. However, a program of maintenance should still be followed to ensure the connections remain tight, undamaged and properly torqued.
