...They sail at more than  30 knots upwind, with 15 knots of wind. The apparent wind is more than 50 knots, ...
Somebody please help me out here. If you go 30 kts directly upwind in 15 kts of breeze, is your apparent wind 45 kts? And anything other than directly upwind, the apparent wind decreases if everything else remains the same?

You can't sail directly upwind, you have to tack your way there. Using your example, but sailing at 45° to the True Wind, it looks like this:

wording was 30 knots directly upwind ..

their was no stipulation that the boat was doing 30 knots on every other course

the speed was 30 knots upwind so that means more than 30 knots boat speed on all other angles

the problems with the wording first

So Dalton did an interview this morning and confirmed what the Auckland City Council said that the deal regarding race courses was done in February but that because LR had a management clean out that probably resulted in the message not being passed on. If so, it is incompetence from the LR side that has caused this debacle.

on the water, I still think LR will be the 36th Challenger

Dalton has the incentive to place blame elsewhere because he’s the one who botched it and is now taking the heat.

I doubt the message was relayed by whispering in peoples ears so if they emailed the people who left in the “clean out” messages should still exist in some form.

I bet it’s not incompetence, I assume they are grinning.

I don't really understand the advantage a below the deck boom offer over a long traveller on the deck (or on the cockpit floor and slightly below deck fairing in this case)?

The positive of no boom and just using a traveller and mainsheet is that you don't have a structure affecting camber down low on the deck sweeper. The negative of this system is that as you ease the mainsheet, the clew can move toward the mast, quickly increasing camber. Of course, you can ease traveller which gives the affect of easing a boom with lots of kicker. Or you can ease both main and traveller together to mimic a boom... until you run out of traveller.

A boom keeps the clew away from the mast as you ease mainsheet, so the leech blows out. It reduces some of the mainsheet loads too, as the sheet is no longer doing the work of an outhaul.

But what confuses me is two things:

Can these booms low go out past where the traveller track could go? If not, then what benefit is there to a boom?

What's the point of having a boom below deck if it can't directly hold the clew as the sail is eased without ripping through the deck?

I would think both boom and boomless are looking for a compromise between the two. Boomless looking to use battens down low to control depth (moving at either the clew, or recessing in to the mast to independently control camber in each skin). Boomed set ups will be looking at articulating the boom to allow a bit of depth low down without killing sail shape.

However, how much does sail that low matter? The booms now are really low, with only a foot or so of skirt to endplate.

^ There is some obvious 'thickening' to the otherwise super slick looking skins, just below the red stripe/window in the photos above. Is that battens or a boom?

- Did LR persist with the below deck set up or give up?

- What feature confirms this phantoms existence?

- Last time seen?

- Do any photos of 'it' exist?

You could always tell when the Italians were about to tack.  There was a shower of cigarette butts going over the side.

The below deck boom idea still can only generate force asking the angle of whatever connects it to the clew, making it not very good at foot tension, at least with boat 1 s angle. I don't think there's much below deck besides a track and ram. I think their foot control is done with very stout battens somehow

Unless they have levers attached to the mainsheet ram that can tilt aft so as to tension the foot, but this seems nutty

The boom can’t be below deck based on the rules, right? It specifies a zone on the mast the boom can attach and that is above the deck. I think they simply have stiff battens and control the shape through those.

LR has always been a beautiful boat, but I think AM Patriot has caught up or even passed her in looks.   Patriots curve on the underside of the hull that slims down at the stern adds another level of elegance.  AM with the pronounced bow down stance, also makes it look more aggressive.
