Wonder if everyone will have pfds this weekend!
It's a wonder there isn't a wind speed where they become required in WLIS. I know this argument has been beaten like a dead horse. Maybe boat owners could institute their own? Is wearling an auto inflate fanny pack all that cumbersome? From years of experience, an easterly or puffy NW is when most of the shit hits the fan and there is most risk for an accident/ MOB. Seems like a no brainer to put one on and go racing. Then again a public viewing is much better than empty casket.

Shit, places like SF Bay they are required, no questions asked, not exceptions. That's a 24/7 365 rule here. We've all adapted and it's a non-issue even in the winter where the wind is lightest.
Not that I disagree with you, but the water is colder all year round in SF Bay. Yes, I know, you can still drown in warm water.

Sat...NW winds 20 to 25 kt with gusts up to 35 kt...diminishing to 15 to 20 kt after midnight. Seas subsiding to 2 to 4 ft.

Come on, they'll race, conditions sound like the 2010 EDLU....
Whether we can race or not usually will depend on keeping an anchor down for the signal boat. That is why easterlies are more difficult than northwesterlies. The direction on the forecast keeps moving more toward due west, which means you have a fetch all the way from the throgs neck bridge Execution. Could get dicey if the gusts are into the forties.
Fixed.

Set the start line up, send them on a LD race, and finish at Plum Point.

Sorry, this attachment is not working. Take a look at a chart of western LIS.

Okay, but aren't you more likely to have big waves when the wind is a Northeasterly due to fetch of the Sound?
Yes, nor'easters are infamous for snotty stuff. Due west can build up big seas as well, and if it's windy enough, keeping an anchor on the bottom can be tricky.

I'm always amazed at how many MOB's there are on WLIS during a regatta.....regardless of wind strenth. Didn't realize there was a manditory PFD rule on SF Bay. Hate to say it but that sucks.

You just contradicted yourself. You say you're amazed at the MOB's in WLIS regardless of wind yet think a PDF rule sucks? Can't follow the logic. In the past three years in SF Bay I've seen exactly one MOB and it was on a j105 where a guy got launched and the video was caught on youtube and posted here on SA. And I race, a lot. Basic facts are the water is cold, 58 degrees year round, the wind blows a good part of the year and there have been deaths in the past that a pfd could have prevented.

So what's the discussion/ conclusion? At a certain point do we institute a rule requiring pfd's, do we require them and everyone supports the marine industry with purchases, do we just deal with the inconvenience (however slight it might be) of wearing one, or do we continue to take chances when there is an amazing number of MOB's regardless of wind strength.

Look, I'm in support of freedom to do whatever but how many people could we not lose to something so simple as drowning. Having known JEB and C, both who drown, I just hate to lose another friend/ sailor. Fair winds and great competition to everyone the next two weekends!

Does anyone remember a high wind layday when Rusty took us to the Long Island Brewing Company?

Old Motel? Dopo?
That was the season that was , Rusty RIP used to bring big half gallon bottles of beer to the boat on race day.

I do remember that day and if my memory serves me right the beer was free because the place had not opened yet.

I brought my boat to Manhasset today, pretty quiet, no many race boats around. Day was beutiful but no wind, had to motor. Oh well beer was cold.
