Here are some things I saw at the Minnesota Maritime Art Museum yesterday.  They have an online gallery at www.mmam.org.  There are considerably more works in the collection than on line, and the place is well worth a visit.  Some of the works I saw in person have a stronger connection to the maritime theme than the online gallery would suggest.

Emanuel Leutze, Washington Crossing the Delaware, 1851. Oil on canvas.  (There are two original paintings identical except for size; the other one is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art)

    I raise you one Lady of the Bay. She is about 10 miles up the back bay from my dock.

I don't know why artists didn't simply give up on painting marine scenes once Turner hit his stride. The best anyone else could ever do would be a very distant second place.

I think this made the cover of Naval Institute Proceedings years ago, there was always a copy on the coffee table. Coast Guard training ship Eagle. When I found out some years later my dad couldn't sail I was shocked, I thought all Coasties could sail.

I doubt a stint on Eagle would teach one much or anything that would translate to sailing a small sloop.

I've never once had to splice a brace or hoist a yardarm in 50 years of sailing.
